Lady Titans stay dominant
After navigating through a tough District 9-4A with only one loss and taking first place, the Lady Titans didn’t skip a beat in their playoff-opening match against Mesquite Poteet on Tuesday.
Centennial earned a straight-set sweep (25-13, 25-13, 25-16) to advance into an area-round matchup against Hillcrest.
Centennial entered the area round with a nine-match winning streak.
Liberty falls to Highland Park
A tough first-round draw spelled the end of Liberty’s season Tuesday night.
The Lady Redhawks (7-7 in District 9-4A) took on Highland Park (14-0 in District 10-4A) from Carrollton R.L. Turner and lost in straight sets.
Highland Park earned a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-17) victory to advance into an area-round match against Seagoville tonight at Ellis Davis Field House.
Americans split road trip
Allen came away from their stay in North Richland Hills on even ground after splitting a pair with the Fort Worth Brahmas.
The Americans got the better end of a shootout Friday, outdueling the Brahmas, 4-3. Scott Howes accounted for two goals while netminder Steve Silverthorn turned away three of the four shooters faced in the shootout.
The Brahmas evened the count that following evening, taking a 3-2 decision that equated Allen’s first loss of the season. Fort Worth scored all three of its goals in the second and fended off a late charge by Allen in the third period.
Rookie Aaron Dell started in goal for Allen.
The Americans look to bounce back with a home-and-home against the Tulsa Oilers this week, skating Friday at 7:05 p.m. from the AEC before journeying to Tulsa Saturday at 7:35 p.m.
Landry Award nominations
For the third straight year, North Texas GMC Dealers will present the area’s top high school football player with The Landry Award.
The honor recognizes the Metroplex’s top high school player. The recipient will be chosen by a voting panel of former coaches and players, media members and local leaders. The Landry Award program will also recognize the Whataburger All-North Texas Team.

Five finalists will be announced in November with 2012’s official winner named Dec. 6 at a ceremony at the Communities Foundation of Texas.
