Deck the Trails 5K run draws crowd, helps many

Published: Tuesday, December 4, 2012 2:51 PM CST
Several hundred people arose early Saturday to participate in the annual Deck the Trails 5K run at Wagon Wheel Park.

The purpose of the run was to raise funds to support the Friends of the Coppell Nature Park. Also, those who participated were encouraged to bring a wrapped gift for the Make A Child Smile program.

With perfect weather for the occasion, the children were treated to a visit from Santa, an elf and a chicken before beginning their own run. About 8:30, the big 5K run started, with hundreds either running or at least walking fast for the event.

A total of 655 people paid registration fees ranging from $15 to $40 for the event.

Braegan Enright, 32, of McKinney was the winner in the overall male category. Emily Denny, 23, of Trophy Club, was the winner in the overall female category. She is the assistant manager of the new Run On! Store in Southlake.

Run On! played a major role in the success of the event.

Mary Waida, Run On! spokesperson, said, “”Many folks came to donate gifts for the Make A Child Smile program. Run On! customers donated gifts for the program on Wednesday before the race. These gifts were delivered to the race site on Saturday. Thanks to everyone’s support, we were able to double the amount of gift donations during the Deck the Trails this year.”

The winners were given custom Christmas ornaments to commemorate their performance.

Santa, who arrived with the elf via the Coppell Fire Department, stayed throughout much of the morning in a big chair beside a Christmas tree. He posed with people of all ages for photographs, and visited with children who told him what they wanted for Christmas.

Throughout the morning, those attending enjoyed food and drinks provided by the vendors who had set up stands at the event.

The Deck the Trails 5K Run benefits both Friends of Coppell Nature Park and the city’s Make a Child Smile Christmas gift collection. Many of the race participants brought wrapped toys to support the Make a Child Smile initiative, which provides assistance to families in need during the holiday season. Financial proceeds from the race will aid in the maintenance of the Coppell Nature Park’s trail system as well as development of the park’s environmental education center.

Friends of Coppell Nature Park is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization serving to maintain and expand the trail system winding through the 66-acre Coppell Nature Park and to facilitate the development of environmental education initiatives. With their immediate goal for construction of a bio-diversity education center, Friends of Coppell Nature Park promotes educational initiatives in the community for best practices of environmental science and sustainability.

Run On! is a running specialty retailer focused on service and fit. In addition to an extensive inventory Run On! offers classes for beginners up to advanced Marathon training programs. Run On! has store locations in Coppell, Dallas, McKinney, Preston/Forest and Richardson and San Antonio.
