Boyd wins McKinney-heavy OrthoTexas Invitational

Boyd came out on top, beating McKinney 71-66 in the OrthoTexas Invitational championship game. McKinney high schools were well-represented in the eight-team boys basketball tournament. In addition to the all-McKinney finals, McKinney North advanced to the semifinals, making three of the final four teams hailing from McKinney.

Broncos senior guard Michael Grant was named the tournament MVP. Boyd hosted the weekend holiday tournament which began on Friday. In addition to Boyd, MSH and North, other tournament teams included Lovejoy, Rockwall, Little Elm, Richardson Pearce and Frisco Centennial.

Lovejoy was the host site for the inaugural tournament in 2009, with Plano Senior laying claim to the event the past two seasons. The event had previously been known as the Avery Air Invitational.

Bobcats end 2012 with loss

The Celina boys basketball team was in action on New Year’s Eve and ended 2012 on a losing note.

The Bobcats dropped a 75-58 contest to Quinlan Ford after both teams entered the locker room with a 30-30 tie.

A pair of juniors led Celina in scoring with Braylin Brown pouring in a team-high 16 points and Deshawn Davis adding 12 more. Senior Kyle Sudberry became the third Bobcat in double figures after chipping in 12 of his own.

Celina will look to start the new year on a winning note when the Bobcats and Lady Bobcats take on Nevada Community in back-to-back home affairs.

Girls’ district hoops begins

The 10-5A girls basketball district season begins Friday. Boyd (9-12) will host Plano West (24-2) at 7 p.m., while McKinney (13-10) travels to Plano Senior (16-6) at 7:30 p.m.

Mason sets program record

McKinney North senior guard Alexis Mason set the Lady Bulldogs’ school record for most points in a single game at 33. The effort came against Plano in the semifinals of the Sherman Holiday Classic.

North beat Celina 62-52 in the final to win the tournament championship. North also beat Melissa 66-50 and Plano 67-62 earlier in the weekend’s holiday tournament. Mason and teammate KK Connor earned all-tournament honors. With their successful weekend, North improves to a dominant 19-3 on the season.

Winter Games of Texas near

For the eighth year in a row, The Winter Games of Texas (the state’s largest multi-sport amateur competition) is coming to Collin County. The event is set for Jan. 18-20, 2013.

Close to 4,000 athletes and 15,000 spectators, coaches, referees and volunteers are expected to participate in this year’s event, which features 13 different sports (basketball, Miracle League Bowling, fencing, figure skating, flag football, gymnastics, ice hockey, martial arts, soccer, swimming, volleyball, table tennis and the 2013 Texas State Weightlifting Championship, which is the latest addition to the annual slate of activities).

While most of the events are taking place in Frisco, the gymnastics portion of the competition will be Jan. 19-20 at ASI Gymnastics-Plano West (4051 Rosemeade Pkwy).

Those who medal in basketball, figure skating, gymnastics, soccer, swimming and table tennis advance to the 2013 State Games of America, which are July 31-August 4. For more information or to register, go to: taaf.com or call: 1-877-463-7472.

DFW Coaches clinic

High school coaches have a chance to learn from their own. On Jan. 23-25, Embassy Suites Outdoor World at DFW Airport will be the site of a DFW Coaches Clinic, featuring a litany of high school coaches as speakers. Sixteen 50-minute lectures will be given by the coaches on hand, with attendees slated to enjoy a Friday night “Chalk Talk” and dinner with one of the state’s top offensive or defensive minds.

There will also be a Texas Hold-Em tournament on Friday, an FCA lecture on Saturday, plus a $1,000 cash prize up for grabs after the last lecture on Sunday. The clinic’s registration fee is $70 if mailed in by Jan. 18 and $80 afterwards. To pre-register, visit the clinic website at coachesclinic.net.
