11-5A BOYS BASKETBALL: Rowlett bounces back against South Garland, Sachse picks up first district win
Published: Thursday, January 3, 2013 12:14 AM CST
Rowlett returned to the court in an unfamiliar position looking to bounce back from a loss.
In fact, after their 14-0 start, the Eagles had dropped back-to-back games in tournament play heading into Wednesday's return to 11-5A play against South Garland.
It did not take long for Rowlett to rediscover its winning ways, though, as it took control early and never looked back in a 80-42 victory.
The Eagles join Lakeview, which defeated Naaman Forest on Wednesday, as the only 2-0 teams in 11-5A.
Rowlett jumped on the Colonels from the outset, opening the game with a 23-3 run. It did not get any better for South Garland, as the Eagles steadily pulled away from there.
Jeffrey Carroll had 28 points and Nathan Hawkins added 12 for Rowlett.
Sachse followed up its strong showing at the Dallas ISD Coca-Cola Tournament by notching its first district win with a 59-49 victory over Garland on Wednesday.
The difference was the first eight minutes, when the Mustangs outscored the Owls 16-3. The Sachse lead was 31-15 at halftime, and while Garland chipped away in the second half, it could never make a serious run.
Tyrique Edwards had 10 points, Michael Olivares scored nine and A.J. Goss and Marlo Johnson each added eight for the Mustangs, who evened their overall record at 9-9.
Sachse will have a bye when 11-5A play resumes on Wednesday while Rowlett will try to improve to 3-0 when it plays at Naaman Forest.
