Robert E. Olsen passed away January 2, 2013, in Garland, Texas.
Robert was born October 27, 1921, to Wilhelm (1879-1968) and Johanna (1885-1966) Olsen in Marshalltown, Iowa.He graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1939. Robert married Martha Olsen on November 7, 1941, at Elim Lutheran Church in Marshalltown. He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in September 1942 and was honorably discharged in November 1945 with a rank of Signalman Second Class. Robert served aboard the Coast Guard Cutter "Fir" in the Northwest Pacific Theater.
He was a former member of the Odd Fellows, Elk Lodge, Rotary Club, and Society of Manufacturing Engineers, a charter member of the Norwegian Society of Texas, American Legion, and the Coast Guard Combat Veterans Association.
In McKinney, Robert served on the City Traffic Commission, Citizens Advisory Board, Planning and Zoning Commission, Board of Adjustments, the Property Committee, and Advisory Board of First Methodist Church and was a member of both the McKinney Country Club and Hurricane Creek Men's Golf Association.
He is survived by his daughter, Karren Evans of Coleman, Texas; grandson, Michael Evans and wife, Kendall; great-grandsons, Connor and Nathan Evans of Rogers Arkansas; grandson, Chad A. Evans; great-grandson, Sidney of Dallas; son, Michael R. Olsen and wife, Nancy of Westminster, Colorado; grandsons, Jeffrey and Scott; great-grandson, Nolan, all of Westminster; son, Jon William (Bill) Olsen and wife, Linda of Garland, Texas; granddaughters, Shawn, Shell, and Shannon; great-grandson, Ryan; great-granddaughters, Cassidy and Kennedy; and great-great-grandson, Carson.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha of 67 years; sister, Ella; and brothers, Ingmar, Wilfred, and Lawrence.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 6, 2013, at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel in Allen, Texas. Interment will follow at Ridgeview Memorial Park in Allen. The family will receive friends during a visitation from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the First United Methodist Church of McKinney Future Fund or Seasons Hospice.
