Tennis: Coppell cruises in District 5-5A opener

Published: Tuesday, September 18, 2012 4:24 PM CDT
During the past four seasons, Flower Mound's tennis team has on occasion had to fight hard to secure wins over district foe Hebron.

Tuesday in the Jaguars' 5-5A opener on the road against the Hawks, they again got all they could handle.

After racing out to a 5-2 start in doubles, Flower Mound held off a late charge from Hebron for a 10-9 victory to improve to 1-0.

"It was a good win, but it was pretty close," said Brad Wikse, Flower Mound head coach. "I knew they had a pretty good little team over there and that it's a tough place to play, but I wasn't expecting the match to be quite that close."

Wikse said the Jaguars continue to have issues with finishing out close matches.

"That's something we are really working on," he said. "We have a lot of talent, but we're pretty inexperienced and we're still learning."

Flower Mound earned a sweep in boys doubles, receiving wins from the teams of Andrew Eurek/Austin Todd (8-2), Aaron Johnson/Cole Schafer (8-2) and Noah Axelrod/Armand Behroozi (8-5). The Lady Jaguars pairings of Kacie Berutti/Marilyn Lu (8-3) and Allie Polk/Maddie Todd (8-1) also secured wins. Singles winners on the boys side were Todd (6-2, 6-4), Eurek (6-4, 6-2), Johnson (6-0, 6-0) and Schafer (6-4, 6-2), while girls winners included Autusa Behroozi (6-3, 6-3). Bianca Benefee (4-6, 6-4, 10-8) and Lily Choi (3-6, 6-3, 10-8) dropped three-setters.

Flower Mound continues in district at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at home against Coppell.

Hebron's winners were Katelyn Dattilo and Alex Samuels in girls doubles (8-5), the mixed team of Philip Dattilo and Tori Pradier (8-1), Philip (6-2, 6-4) and Austin Fix (6-4, 7-5) in boys singles, and Pradier (6-2, 6-2), Katelyn (6-2, 6-1), Samuels (6-4, 6-3), Samantha Hart (4-6, 6-4, 10-8) and Kendall Risser (3-6, 6-3, 10-8) in girls singles.

Marcus, meanwhile, had little difficulty with Denton Ryan as they didn't so much as drop a set in their 19-0 win.

More impressively, in 19 combined matches (seven 8-game pro-sets), the Marauders and Lady Marauders had 11 matches in which they dropped one or no games.

"It's always good to get a win and that was a good way to start district," said Kelly Langdon, Marcus head coach. "Ryan had a tough time and I know their coach mentioned they were missing a few kids. But our kids did a great job, too. We're 8-1 on the season and we're still working on trying to do a better job in doubles and with our processes there. That's the biggest thing for us right now."

On the boys side, doubles winners were Sebastian Langdon/Ben Wegendt (8-2), Tucker Barnes/David Wittkower (8-3) and Samuel Karnes/David Lally (8-5). Individually, Langdon (6-0, 6-0), Wegendt (6-1, 6-2), Wittkower (6-0, 6-0), Barnes (6-1, 6-2), Nick Van Den Handel (6-4, 6-4) and Lally (6-1, 6-3) picked up wins.

On the girls side, winning doubles tandems included Preethi Kasilingam/Molly Fisher (8-0), Vanessa Phan/Nicole Wilson (8-1) and Ludivine Varga/Anna McMullen (8-0). In singles, Kasilingam (6-0, 6-1), Fisher (6-1, 6-0), Varga (6-1, 6-2), Phan (6-1, 6-0), McMullen (6-1, 6-0) and Wilson (6-0, 6-0) all cruised.

The mixed doubles team of Tanya Jacques/Joshua Peters also won convincingly (8-0).

Up next for Marcus is a home match against Lewisville at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The Farmers, however, did not get out to as solid of a start, falling to Coppell, 19-0.

Coppell's sweep included particularly dominant performances as the Cowboys and Cowgirls combined for 14 perfect sets and didn't drop more than four games in any set - and that was in an eight-game pro set.

Julianne Cauley, Logan Astudillo, Lizzie Bell, Mira Shah, Melissa Coburn, Maggie Stone, Abby White, Zixiao Li, Kihwan Lee, Tyler Stayer, Jacob Villanueva, Sid Bagaria, Danny Bush and Josh Abaya all won singles matches and in their respective doubles matches.

Danny Bush and Aakash Pai won in doubles and singles, respectively.
