Football: Carlos' four field goals help Hebron past Timberview

Published: Tuesday, September 11, 2012 4:46 PM CDT
After falling behind for the first time in the contest early in the third quarter against Mansfield Timberview, Hebron's football team made the necessary defensive adjustments and never looked back as the Hawks closed strong with 17 unanswered points to top the Wolves, 33-19.

"It was a good win," said Brian Brazil, Hebron head coach. "I don't know if it's quite the same team as last year without their stud quarterback. But they're still a very good team and they have a defense that can really run to the ball. It was a tough game."

The win improves Hebron to 1-1 as the Hawks continue preparation for District 5-5A play when they travel to face Keller Fossil Ridge at 7 p.m. Thursday from the Keller ISD Athletic Complex.

While Hebron's offense was effective in the win over Timberview, it was Hebron kicker Joel Carlos who may have provided the difference for the Hawks.

Carlos made four field goals on the night, converting from distances of 40, 41, 29 and 52 yards. Two of the field goals gave Hebron leads, another one tied the score and latter of 52 yards pushed the Hawks' lead to seven points early in the fourth quarter before Hebron running back Dezmond Wortham tacked on an insurance score late in the quarter from 14 yards out to seal the win.

"Joel played great," Brazil said. "I mean, the 42-yarder was huge. But the other field goals came at times when we were tied or down and were pressure kicks. We really needed them. We always want to try and get touchdowns instead of field goals, but it's nice to know we have him back there if we need him. On top of that, he did a great job kicking off and had a touchback on every kick but one."

Another area Brazil was impressed with was Hebron's stamina.

"I was really pleased with how we got better as the game wore on," he said. "We didn't show fatigue and didn't play tired, which was big, because it was dicey for a bit. We gave up one big run on the option when we weren't lined up correctly. But in the second half, our defense played great and they didn't really even get close to doing anything after their first scoring drive of the second half. The offense did a great job of controlling the ball."

Wortham finished with 109 yards on 26 carries, while Braelen Evans and Vandy Parkes chipped in 36 and 29 yards, respectively.

Quarterback Caron Proffitt completed 8-of-16 passes for 135 yards. Parkes and Austin Morgenstern led the team with two catches apiece, while Shawn Slowinski had a 44-yard reception to set up Carlos' first field goal.

"We have to get better on third down, though," Brazil added. "And we had a few costly penalties here and there."

Hebron now prepares for a Fossil Ridge team that has lost both of its games by a combined 16 points.

"Fossil Ridge likes to throw it around," Brazil said. "On defense, they run a 4-3 and can bring the pressure. They're a good team."
