11-5A BOYS BASKETBALL: Rowlett crushes North Garland, Sachse edges South

Published: Wednesday, January 9, 2013 2:30 PM CST
Rowlett's first two losses of the season are a thing of the past.

The Eagles returned from tournament action this past week with three consecutive victories, the latest of which was a 90-71 win over North Garland on Tuesday.

Rowlett is now 17-2 overall on the year and its 4-0 mark in 11-5A pushes them a half-game ahead of Lakeview, who was idle on Tuesday, for the top spot in the district standings.

It was a methodical victory for the Eagles. They scored 27 points in the opening quarer to take the lead and pushed the advantage to 52-41 by halftime.

The second half was more of the same, as they steadily pulled away in handing North Garland its third loss in as many district games.

Jeffrey Carroll had 23 points to lead a quartet of Eagles in double figures. Nathan Hawkins scored 21 points, Kanard Robinson added 13 and Chris Heath chipped in with 10.

Sachse surged into third place by improving to 2-1 in 11-5A with a 56-53 win over South Garland on Tuesday.

It was a hard-fought game against a Colonel team that was desperately searching for its first district win.

Sachse led 25-24 at halftime and while the score stayed close throughout the second half, the Mustangs were able to hang on behind 11 points from A.J. Goss and 10 from Marcus Hubbard.

This is a big week ahead in 11-5A, starting with Friday's game between the Eagles and Patriots with first place on the line at Lakeview Centennial High School.

Sachse also has a huge game as it tries to hold on to third place when it plays on the road at Naaman Forest.

SATURDAY

Rowlett had little problem on Saturday in taking care of Naaman Forest for a 69-50 victory.

The Eagles were strong offensively in the second quarter, scoring 25 points to open a 40-23 halftime lead.

Behind 29 points from Carroll and 15 from Hawkins, Rowlett cruised from there to stay undefeated in district play.

WEDNESDAY

Rowlett returned to the court last Wednesday in an unfamiliar position looking to bounce back from a loss.

In fact, after their 14-0 start, the Eagles had dropped back-to-back games in tournament play heading into their return to 11-5A play against South Garland.

It did not take long for Rowlett to rediscover its winning ways, though, as it took control early and never looked back in a 80-42 victory.

Rowlett jumped on the Colonels from the outset, opening the game with a 23-3 run. It did not get any better for South Garland, as the Eagles steadily pulled away from there.

Carroll had 28 points and Hawkins added 12 for Rowlett.

Sachse followed up its strong showing at the Dallas ISD Coca-Cola Tournament by notching its first district win with a 59-49 victory over Garland last Wednesday.

The difference was the first eight minutes, when the Mustangs outscored the Owls 16-3. The Sachse lead was 31-15 at halftime, and while Garland chipped away in the second half, it could never make a serious run.

Tyrique Edwards had 10 points, Michael Olivares scored nine and Goss and Marlo Johnson each added eight for the Mustangs.
