Lady Eagles in Prep Showcase

The Allen girls soccer team will start the season today by taking part in the 2013 National Elite Prep Showcase, which is the toughest girls soccer tournament in the country.

Nine of country's top 50 teams will be at the event in Fort Worth.

The Lady Eagles open play at 1 p.m. today from TCU against Hebron. Allen will play twice at Gateway on Friday, facing Amarillo at 10 a.m. on field No. 2 and St. Stephen's at 4 p.m. on field No. 1. The team wraps up at 2 p.m. Saturday, facing Ursuline at TCU.

Sidekicks suffer first loss

The Dallas Sidekicks fell from the ranks of the PASL unbeaten Sunday, dropping an 8-7 overtime decision to the Chicago Mustangs.

Dallas rallied for two unanswered goals inside the final two minutes of regulation.

Utilizing an extra attacker, the Sidekicks recorded goals by Nick Stavrou and Franck Mbemba -- both assisted by Ricardinho -- within 30 seconds to tie Chicago, 7-7.

But the Dallas' rally would fall short after Bryan Velazquez found the back of the net 4:57 into overtime to deal the Sidekicks their first loss. In defeat, Dallas was led by four points from Ricardinho (one goal, three assists).

A night earlier, the Sidekicks had established a franchise-best start to the season at 8-0 following an 11-4 win over the Rockford Rampage.

Now 8-1, Dallas won't have to wait for a crack at redemption as it hosts Chicago at 7 p.m. Saturday from the AEC.

Americans hit Lucky No. 7

The Allen Americans started 2013 the same way they ended 2012: on a winning streak.

Allen's season-high streak is up to seven after a five-day span in which the team knocked off the Tulsa Oilers (6-2), Rapid City Rush (5-4) and Fort Worth Brahmas (4-3).

On Friday, Allen beat Tulsa as Brett Skinner returned from IR and scored two goals, Jamie Schaafsma did the same and Jason Deitsch registered a shorthanded goal in his 500th pro game. It was exceedingly tougher the next night as the Americans trailed to start the third period, 4-2, before rattling off three unanswered goals. Schaafsma notched the game winner with 4:54 left.

It was Fort Worth that attempted to stage a comeback Tuesday.

Allen led, 4-1, early in the final frame, but Fort Worth pulled to within 4-3 thanks to a pair of goals from John Snowden. Steve Silverthorn (12-2-1, 2.77 GAA) wouldn't allow another goal.

The Americans (24-5-2, 50 points) face the Brahmas twice this weekend, hosting at 7:05 p.m. Friday from the AEC before traveling to the NYTEX Sports Centre at 7:05 p.m. Saturday.

Allen leads Wichita for first place in the CHL by five points with four games in hand.

Hall of Honor nominations

Though the Allen ISD began enshrining people into its Hall of Honor when Eagle Stadium opened, the district is still seeking future nominees.

Candidates must be ex-athletes, employees, teams or supporters of AISD. They must have graduated from Allen at least 10 years ago and demonstrated good character throughout their post-high school athletic career. If a nominee is deceased, a representative of his/her family may accept the honor.

Nomination forms can be found at: allenisd.org.

Nominations should include as much detail as possible to help choose the best candidates. The selection committee will name recipients at an annual AISD Hall of Honor banquet.
