Poteet's Ramsey, West Mesquite's Battles lead the way on 10-4A all-district team

Published: Wednesday, December 19, 2012 1:55 AM CST
It was another successful season for both the Poteet and West Mesquite football teams.

The Pirates advanced to the Class 4A Division II Region II championship game for the second time in the last three years before falling to Lancaster in a tough 21-13 loss.

The Wranglers qualified for the playoffs for the seventh consecutive year, although they were upended in the bi-district round in a close loss to Frisco Centennial.

While neither team was able to hoist the ultimate prize of a state championship, there are still other honors to be had, and several Poteet and West Mesquite players were recongnized on the 10-4A all-district team.

The Pirates had 17 players honored on the first and second teams and claimed two superlative awards.

Senior Tanner Ramsey was named co-most valuable player after emerging as one of the top dual threat quarterbacks in the state. Ramsey threw for 3,049 yards and 34 touchdowns compared with only nine interceptions and added 742 yards and 17 scores on the ground.

Malik Jefferson made an instant splash from his linebacker position to earn defensive sophomore of the year honors. Jefferson had 74 tackles and led the Pirates with 24 tackles for loss, seven sacks, five forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and four blocked kicks.

That duo joined nine other Poteet players on the 10-4A first team as they continued to build on the foundation that was laid three years ago when head coach Randy Jackson took over the program.

"We've won 30 games in three years and I'm really proud of that," he said. "I'm proud to be at Poteet and we're going to keep going and keep getting better and I think we'll have a good team again next year."

West Mesquite senior Darryl Battles was named co-most valuable player along with Ramsey and Highland Park's Jet Tuma. Battles led the Wranglers with 102 tackles and nine sacks, while adding five tackles for loss and four pass breakups.

Quarterback Chason Virgil was named offensive sophomore of the year after throwing for 2,315 yards and 21 touchdowns in leading the Wranglers to an 8-3 record.

Battles and Virgil were two of the 10 West Mesquite players named to the 10-4A first team.
