Stayin' alive: Bobcats earn area-round matchup against Madison

Published: Sunday, November 18, 2012 5:53 PM CST
It isn't a matter of how you win, but if you win.

Celina took care of business in its bi-district matchup against Krum, earning a 58-27 victory and advancing into the area round of the playoffs.

However, it wasn't the prettiest victory for the Bobcats after earning 16 penalties for 146 yards, with a majority of the flags coming in the opening two quarters.

"We were just pressing too much at the beginning of the game," said Bill Elliott, Celina head coach.

The mistakes allowed Krum to keep it tight and Celina managed just a 31-27 lead at the break despite dominating in nearly every other statistical category.

"We talked about it at halftime and got it corrected," Elliott said.

Without flags stalling drives and keeping Krum possessions alive, the Bobcats pulled away in the final two quarters by scoring 27 unanswered points for a 31-point victory.

The Bobcats finished the game with exactly twice as many yards as Krum, outgaining their opponent 568 to 284.

"We were able to do some things we thought we would be able to against them," Elliott said.

That offensive domination included a 9.04 yards per carry average that featured four players with more than 60 yards on the ground. Leading the group was junior running back Deshawn Davis, who tallied 162 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.

Celina also had success through the air with sophomore quarterback Nathan Elliott completing 7-of-15 pass attempts for 125 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

"I thought Nathan managed the game and controlled the game," coach Elliott said. "We gave him a little more freedom with ball."

The offensive production came one week after the Celina offense was held scoreless in a 45-7 loss to Argyle. Elliott said a rebound win against Krum should restore some of his team's confidence.

"There's always a little double in your mind after a game like that," coach Elliott said. "But we still came out swinging and the kids rose to the occasion."

The victory puts the Bobcats into a 7:30 p.m. area-round meeting against Madison on Friday at Denton Bronco Stadium.

"[Madison] has a lot of skill players and a huge line up front," coach Elliott said. "It'll be a challenge."

The two teams last met in a Nov. 24, 2006 meeting that saw Celina come away with a 43-6 victory.

"We still have to figure out what they can do," coach Elliott said.

One thing that shouldn't be a problem for the Bobcats during the Madison contest is the same penalties that plagued them during their bi-district game against Krum.

"We'll concentrate on that and get those problems eliminated," coach Elliott said.
