Boys basketball: Farmers lock down opponents in Garland

Defense was the key during the past week as Lewisville's boys basketball team has limited its opponents to fewer than 50 points in 4-of-5 games, in which the Farmers notched four wins.
On Tuesday, the Farmers cranked up the offense as well, picking up a blowout win over Irving, 68-48.
"It went well," said Gary Collier, Lewisville head coach. "We shot well and played defense well. I'm very happy with the progress we have been making."
"We were able to get everyone in the game," Collier said. "And we shot the ball well and on 3-pointers, which I was pleased to see because Irving was primarily running a zone defense."
Davis and Loggins paced the Farmers with seven and six rebounds, respectively.
"We rebounded well," Collier added. "After Anthony and Caleb, it was a guy with two here or three there. We really spread it around and it was a team effort. We also did a good job of getting some steals and forcing more of an up-tempo game, because it seemed like Irving was trying to slow it down on us."
Lewisville was coming off a 3-1 performance during the weekend at the GISD Curtis Culwell Invitational in Garland. The Farmers dropped their opener against Plano East, 49-34, but bounced back to win three consecutive and take the consolation title. Lewisville defeated South Garland (44-29), Garland (59-34) and Little Elm (62-58) in the consolation finals.
Kaelin Love and Ward paced the squad with 17 and 11 points, respectively, against Little Elm as the Farmers outscored the Lobos, 29-18, in the fourth quarter. Against Garland, Davis (14) and Wright (13) led Lewisville in scoring. The Farmers had nine players score in the win over the Colonels.
"Our defense was where it needed to be," Collier said. "But we're still working on scoring a few more baskets. We were getting shots where we liked them, we just weren't knocking them down. I think it's a little psychological and mental. But I'm not really concerned. We're so young and young kids have a little bit of a tendency to second-guess themselves. I think as we keep playing and gain confidence, we'll start knocking them down more often."
Lewisville took Friday off and resumes non-district play at 7 p.m. Tuesday when it hosts Cedar Hill.
"It will give us some time to rest up," Collier said. "We have a couple of guys with some dinged up ankles and it should help them up. And we're going to be working on putting in a few more sets on offense."
