A man was arrested Sunday night in McKinney after robbing a gas station at gunpoint and nearly striking police with his vehicle.
Police say that at around 10 p.m., the suspect, Devon Mendez, 26, robbed the Tetco gas station at U.S. Highway 380 and U.S. Highway 75 wielding a gun and wearing a mask. Mendez fled the scene southbound on U.S. 75 in a maroon Jeep Cherokee, driving backwards on the freeway entrance ramp to get to the service road, Deputy Chief Joe Ellenburg said.
After citizens called police to notify them of the erratic driving, officers working off-duty at a highway construction zone pursued the suspect into the Stonebridge area, where the suspect turned onto Timber Circle. Once police began to conduct a "felony traffic stop," Ellenburg said, the suspect drove over a curb toward two officers who out of their vehicles.
Both officers gave chase and apprehended the suspect. Neither the suspect nor the officers were injured.
Police recovered the gun and mask used in the Tetco robbery from the suspect's vehicle.
Mendez was booked into the Collin County Detention Center on aggravated robbery, aggravated assault and evading arrest, all felonies. He is being held there on $55,000 bond.
