WEB EXCLUSIVE: Back on track: Lady Bobcats rebound from first district loss

Published: Wednesday, January 16, 2013 1:24 PM CST
It didn’t take long for the Celina girls basketball team to get back on the winning track.

The Lady Bobcats rebounded from last week’s home loss to Frisco Lone Star by dismantling Aubrey, 63-35, on Friday.

“We knew the environment would be hostile,” said Jordan Davis, Celina girls head coach. “Aubrey was ready to play.”

The homecourt advantage allowed Aubrey to carry a 14-13 edge into the second quarter. However, that’s when the Lady Bobcats put their foot on the gas and began to slowly pull away. A 14-6 run in the second gave Celina a seven-point lead at the break and the Lady Bobcats widened that margin in each of the final two frames. The run was thanks in large part to sophomore forward KJ Stastny, who scored a game-high 25 points in the contest.

“It was definitely one of [Stastny’s] best games of the season,” Davis said. “Not just because of her scoring, but because of her decision making.”

Stastny helped Celina score 18 points in the third and fourth quarters, while Aubrey was limited to eight in the third and seven in the final frame. That discrepancy allowed for a 28-point road victory that puts Celina’s season mark at 21-4.

“We did what we could early on,” Davis said. “We came out a lot sharper in the second half and did a good job of finishing.”

Sophomore guard Alex Jones added 11 points for the Lady Bobcats, with junior guard Callie Wells becoming the third Celina player in double figures with 10 of her own.

The Lady Bobcats had a bye Tuesday and will look to improve to 3-1 against District 10-3A counterparts with a 6:30 p.m. home game Friday against Argyle.

“That’s definitely going to be a tough matchup,” Davis said. “[Argyle] is solid all the way around and they have a well-coached team.”

After a Jan. 8 loss to Lone Star, Davis said the Argyle showdown presents a must-win situation if the Lady Bobcats are to stay in contention for the 10-3A crown.

“We always want to win district,” she said. “This is a game we have to have if we want to keep that a possibility.”

Bobcats drop emotional opener

When the Bobcats began district Friday, they encountered an inspired performance from Aubrey guard Javion Williams.

Williams found out about his father’s death an hour before tip-off and used those emotions to pour in a game-high 35 points that featured nine shots from beyond the arc.

“[Williams] was hitting shots with a hand in his face,” said Dusty Hutson, Celina boys head coach. “His game was really inspired.”

Williams led Aubrey to a 73-60 victory, despite a 26-point fourth quarter from the Bobcats.

“I was upset that we lost, but I liked our effort,” Hutson said.

The team had three players in double figures, with junior Braylin Brown scoring a team-high 21 points. The loss dropped the Bobcats to 5-9 on the season, but Hutson said he thinks his team is on the cusp of putting together a good run.

“We’re playing hard,” he said. “Our kids give great effort. Maybe we’re starting to turn the corner.”

Celina looks to end a season-high five-game losing streak Friday when Argyle comes to town for a 7:30 p.m. matchup.

“[Argyle] is going to be tough,” Hutson said. “They’re the defending state champs. We should have a great crowd though.”
