10-4A BOYS BASKETBALL: West Mesquite tops Creekview to remain in tie for first place

Published: Wednesday, January 16, 2013 4:06 AM CST
It is a dangerous proposition for opponents to try to run with West Mesquite, the top-scoring offense in the district.

Carrollton Creekview tried to do just that on Tuesday, and while they were able to keep up for a half, the Wranglers finally pulled away late for a 80-73 victory.

West Mesquite improves to 5-1 in district play and remains tied for first place in 10-4A with Carrollton Newman Smith, who defeated Poteet on Tuesday.

The Wranglers have been prone to hot and cold spells, but they were consistent on Tuesday, scoring between 19 and 21 points every quarter.

The Mustangs stayed right with them and actually took a one-point lead into halftime. But West Mesquite kept the pressure on, taking a 59-57 lead through three quarters and then pulled away late.

Braylon Rayson had 18 points as five Wranglers scored in double figures. Jordan Johnson had 17 points, Tyrone Davis scored 16 and Nate Davis and Jalen Etienne each added 15.

Creekview's Ian Spaight had 26 points to lead all scorers while teammate Alex Rincon chipped in with 13.

Poteet played right with district co-leader Carrollton Newman Smith for three quarters. Unfortunately for the Pirates, they never could overcome the opening period and that was the difference in a 70-60 loss.

As a result, Poteet (3-3) suddenly finds itself in fifth place after both Highland Park and North Forney won on Tuesday.

The Pirates came out cold and trailed 15-4 after the first quarter. Behind 24 points from Raffaele Gaines, Poteet stepped up the offense and drew to within 51-45 heading to the fourth.

But the Trojans were able to withstand the charge to remain in a tie atop the district standings.

Stephen Spurlock had 14 points to lead a group of four Newman Smith players in double figures.

The Pirates have now lost three consecutive games and will try to bounce back on Friday when they face Forney to close out the first half of the regular season. Poteet will host Highland Park, a team it trails by a game in the standings but who they beat in the district opener, on Tuesday.

West Mesquite will host winless Terrell on Friday and then has a chance to help the Pirates out on Tuesday against North Forney.

In another big game on Friday, Highland Park will travel to face North Forney with the winner taking over sole possession of third place.

FRIDAY

Every slate of games seems to bring about multiple changes in the congested 10-4A standings and Friday was no different.

When the dust settled, West Mesquite and Carrollton Newman Smith remained ahead of the field.

The Wranglers, with their 68-50 victory over Poteet, and the Trojans, with a 84-59 stomping of Forney, held a slight one-game lead over the Pirates, Highland Park and North Forney.

West Mesquite turned a tight game into a late blowout in its victory on Friday. Rayson had a big game with 28 points, with Johnson adding 13 and Nate Davis chipping in with 10.

Poteet had four players in double figures, with Nathaniel Gaines scoring 16 points, Raffaele Gaines tallying 11 and Verkedric Vaughns and Chris Murphy each adding 10.
