Talk sports with Tony Hill on Saturday
Like to talk about sports but no one will listen? Visit the Allen Public Library and meet other sports enthusiasts at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 12, in the APL Meeting Room. Saturday morning quarterbacking is perfectly acceptable! Also, view some sports books that the library has in its collection.
For the first program, former Dallas Cowboy wide receiver Tony Hill will listen to and respond to participants. In 1978, Tony garnered a Super Bowl ring when the Cowboys defeated the Denver Broncos 27-10 in Super Bowl XII. Known for his agility and unparalleled acceleration, the late Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry gave Tony the title of "Our Home Run Hitter." Sports Talk participants will have a chance to view Tony's Super Bowl ring.

Allen Heritage Guild presents 'Historic Assets'
The Allen Heritage Guild is sponsoring a workshop from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Allen Arts Alliance Blue House Gallery at 102 S. Allen Drive.
The workshop is presented by the Collin County Historical Commission and is on "Historic Assets." The county has a program to recognize and record all county historical assets and collect all information to a central location and then place on a county "interactive" map so anyone can access the information/history.
The featured presenter is Loydell Seward of Farmersville. She will be explaining the forms used to gather the information and how it needs to be submitted. The public is invited and encouraged to attend to help remember and preserve history from the Allen area.

'Cool Like Steve McQueen' film series continues
Jan. 15 - The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), an Oscar winner for Best Music, Original Song. Starring Steve McQueen, Oscar winner Faye Dunaway and Paul Burke. A debonair, adventuresome bank executive believes he has pulled off the perfect multi-million dollar heist, only to match wits with a sexy insurance investigator who will do anything to get her man.
Jan. 22 - Bullitt (1968) starring Steve McQueen, Jacqueline Bisset and Robert Vaughn. This Oscar-winning film for Best Film Editing features an all-guts, no-glory San Francisco cop who becomes determined to find the underworld kingpin who killed the witness in his protection.
Jan. 29 - The Getaway (1972) starring Steve McQueen, Sally Struthers, Slim Pickens and Ali MacGraw. A recently released ex-con and his loyal wife go on the run after a heist goes awry.
Free films begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday nights at the Allen Civic Auditorium, 300 N. Allen Drive.
VALA to meet Wednesday
The Visual Arts League of Allen (VALA) will be meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 16. If you are a local artist or visual arts supporter, we invite you to join us. We share our work, creativity, and experiences, and have fun activities. Get involved in the local arts community and make some new friends. VALA meets the third Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Blue House, 102 S. Allen Drive.
Two of our VALA artists, Kelly Bartlett and Linda Alred, are currently showing their work in a exhibit entitled "All that Glitters, The art of Iridescence" at Frame Master Gallery, NW corner of Greenville and McDermott in Allen. The exhibition runs through the end of January. Stop by between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Lovejoy HS presents 'Little Shop of Horrors'
Lovejoy presents the iconic Little Shop of Horrors, a musical composed by Alan Menken. Step backwards into a 1950's sci-fi film with irresistible doo-wop songs, star-crossed lovers and the mutated plant that makes it all happen.
The story follows the hapless Seymour Krelborn (Bo Graham), who works in a failing flower shop owned by the always-pessimistic Mr. Mushnik (Alex Adkins). Things seem to take a turn for the better during a solar eclipse when Seymour finds a strange and interesting plant that he names Audrey II (voiced by Nathan Thorley) as an homage to his long-time crush and co-worker Audrey (Erin Shafranek).
The plant brings Seymour unprecedented fame and fortune and even helps him catch the attention of the beautiful Audrey, but what will Seymour do when the ever-growing Audrey II's cravings change from plant food to people?
Performances will be at the LHS Auditorium on Thursday, Jan. 17, Friday, Jan. 18, and Saturday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for students and seniors and $15 for adults and may be purchased in advance online at http://www.Lovejoytheatre.org or, if available, at the door the night of the shows.
Salt Creek Bluegrass
January usually brings cold fronts, but the heat is on when Salt Creek Bluegrass Band performs at the Allen Public Library.
Sponsored by Allen Public Library, this program is free. Tickets are issued at 7 p.m., and the program begins at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 18, at the Allen Civic Auditorium, 300 N. Allen Drive.
Allen's Community Theater presents 'Charlotte's Web'
Allen's Community Theater starts off the New Year with the classic tale of an unlikely friendship between a pig and a spider. Charlotte's Web, adapted by Joseph Robinette and based on the book by E.B. White, is the story of Wilbur the Pig and the enduring friendship he develops with a poetic spider named Charlotte.
The show is directed by Robin Coulonge and runs at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, Feb. 1 and 2 and Feb. 8 and 9. There will be a special matinee performance at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9. Performances will be at the Allen Christian Church in the heart of Allen Heritage Village, 450 E. St. Mary Drive. Ticket prices are $15 adults/$13 senior citizens/$10 students.

The Legend of Benny Binion, Dallas Gambler and Mob Boss
Many consider Benny Binion the general of Collin County's most noted soldiers of fortune. Learn more about his colorful life from Jim Gatewood, author of "Benny Binion: The Legend of Benny Binion, Dallas Gambler and Mob Boss." The program begins at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 24, at the Allen Public Library.
An insurance executive, Jim Gatewood became interested in the Dallas gambling, drug and liquor wars because of a childhood experience. A well-dressed corpse had been found in the cotton rows of his family's farm on Duck Creek in Garland. At that time, Dallas County Sheriff Smoot Schmid's chief investigator Bill Decker, who later became Dallas County Sheriff, told Gatewood's father that the victim was just one more casualty of the underworld war for control of Dallas gambling.
Born in the "four corners" region of Collin County, an area where Collin, Fannin, Grayson and Hunt Counties converge, Benny Binion accompanied his father, a horse trader, on trips to county fairs across the countryside to swap horses.
At 17, Binion left Collin County and moved to El Paso, where he undertook risky moonshining and rum-running across the border. There, he learned to gamble and how to manage the numbers rackets. He ran illegal craps games in hotel rooms and served in prison for selling liquor during Prohibition. In 1931, he moved to Dallas, where he soon became a formidable force. Acquiring dominance in this underworld meant numerous bloody turf wars took place.

Register now for vegetable gardening seminar
The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and Collin County Master Gardeners Association will conduct "Spring into Vegetable Gardening" on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at Myers Park and Event Center in McKinney.
This educational program will provide attendees with the information they need to have a successful experience growing delicious and nutritious vegetables in their own gardens. The seminar will address five major topics, each 25 minutes long, presented by Collin County Master Gardeners with decades of collective experience:
- Site selection, raised bed construction and soil preparation
- Irrigation
- Plant selection and seeds vs. transplants
- Square foot gardens and vertical gardens
- Maintenance, fertilization, and pest control
Demonstration tables and displays will be manned by Master Gardeners to answer questions. Attendees will also take home seeds and printed information to get their spring gardens off to a great start.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the program is from 9 a.m. to noon. There is a registration fee of $1 to attend the event, which can be paid at the door by check, cash or credit card. Attendees must pre-register at the Collin County Master Gardeners website, www.ccmgatx.org, or contact the Collin County AgriLife Extension office at 972-548-4219.
Myers Park and Event Center is located at 7117 County Road 166 in McKinney.
Allen Folk Music Society
Third Saturday of each month at the Blue House, 102 S. Allen Drive at 7 p.m. Bring an acoustic instrument, a song to share, and a snack to share (no alcohol). Open to ages 15-100.
Allen Philharmonic & Symphony Chorus
The chorus meets every Monday evening from 7-9 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Allen, 601 S. Greenville Ave.
Note-ably North Texas Chorus
The chorus meets every Thursday evening from 7-10 p.m. at Grace Evangelical Free Church, 2005 Estates Parkway in Allen. Use the east entrance around the back of the church.
Weekly 6 a.m. social run
Gather at Luke's Locker every Thursday morning at 6 a.m. for a 45-minute social run. Out and back run, for all levels, bagels and coffee after at the store. Visit http://www.watterscreek.com/ for information.
