Welcoming Baby New Year
Sonja Michelle Threlkeld is the first baby born at Lake Pointe Medical Center in 2013. She was born at 4:46 a.m. on Jan. 2. She was 19 inches long and weighed 6 pounds and 13 ounces.
Her parents are Marquetta Noel Vaughn and Khaliq Threlkeld of Mesquite.
Young artists invited to enter works in contest
The Rowlett Arts and Humanities Commission sponsors an annual art exhibit for students in kindergarten though high school. This exhibit recognizes talented young artists as well as their art teachers. The exhibit encourages young artists, validates their work, and helps parents and community members become more aware of the visual arts programs in our schools.
The contest is open to all students of the Lake Ray Hubbard area in grades K-12. Grade divisions include K-5, 6-8 and 9-12, and there are two categories, 2D and 3D.
Artwork and entry forms will be accepted from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Rowlett Public Library. Ribbons will be displayed on artworks following the judging; all entries will be displayed at the Rowlett Library until Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013. First-place winners will be presented cash prizes at the Rowlett City Council meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 19.

Learn the ins and outs of insurance
Insurance, although essential these days, can be quite confusing. Beginning at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 22, Jon Niven, outreach specialist with the Texas Department of Insurance Compliance Division, will present an informative session in which he will address such issues as:
* Are you paying too much for homeowners and/or car insurance?
* Should you reduce your collision insurance amount?
* Should tablets, smartphones, big-screen TVs, etc., be covered in your policy?
* What is the difference between wind damage and a tornado, according to insurance companies?
The free program is provided by the Rowlett Senior Advisory Board and will be held at the Rowlett Community Centre, 5300 Main St.
'Woof it' at the library with Four Paws Dancing Dogs
From 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26, see amazing rescue dogs perform tricks that cheer up patients in nursing homes, rehabilitation centers and hospitals. Delightful fun for the whole family.

Mark Black History Month with library contest
The Rowlett Public Library invites the children of Rowlett to design an original bookmark celebrating Black History Month. Pick up an entry form with a bookmark template on it at the library and use it to feature a person, invention, or event with historical significance.
All children in grades K-12 who live in or attend school in the Rowlett area are eligible to enter the contest. Children who attend home school or who attend a school without grade levels should enter the comparable grade level. Categories are grades K-1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-8 and 9-12. One winner for each category (five total) will be chosen.
Judging will be done by the Arts and Humanities Commission of Rowlett. Winners will be announced on Wednesday, Jan. 30. Bookmarks will be reproduced, laminated and made available in the library during February.
All entries must be clear and reproducible, and only one entry is allowed per person. Winning bookmarks become the property of the Rowlett Public Library. For information, call the library at 972-412-6161.

Is fitness a goal? Start the new year off right! Registration is now open for a full slate of fitness classes, children's activities, sports teams and activities for older adults offered by the Parks and Recreation Department at the Rowlett Community Centre. The Spring Lakeside Leisure catalog has information on more than 50 ways to get healthy and stay active, right here in your hometown.
Get fit with Zumba, Body Works, Spin, Yogalates and many other exercise classes. Sign the kids up for racquetball, basketball, soccer and hockey. Adults can get in on the team sports action as well with basketball, volleyball and softball.
Highlights include new cross-training classes, polymer jewelry making classes, art classes that include Zentangle, pastels, and acrylic painting. Also new are group piano classes, Basic Archery, Beginning Golf, and a Girl's Youth Volleyball league. Kids can attend a Spring Breakout Camp and there are many activities for older adults, too, such as bridge, monthly lunch socials, fitness and computer classes and field trips.

Rowlett Public Library offers a book club for everyone
Every Wednesday from 2-3:30 p.m., the Rowlett Public Library hosts a book club just for homeschool teens. The meeting offers a great way to socialize and share what you're currently reading.
Readers can also join the "No Page Unturned" club on the third Thursday of every month for a lively and entertaining book discussion, sharing what they're currently reading with the group. The meeting is BYOL - Bring Your Own Latte - and the library will supply the cookies! The club meets from 7 to 8 p.m.

Skywarn training offered Feb. 16
The Fort Worth office of the National Weather Service (NWS) will conduct its annual basic Skywarn class from 9 a.m.-noon and an advanced class from 1:30-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Granville Arts Center, 300 N 5th St., Garland.
The training will include basics of thunderstorm development, fundamentals of storm structure, identifying potential severe weather features, information to report, how to report information and basic severe weather safety.
The main responsibility of a Skywarn spotter is to assist the NWS in locating and tracing storms. About 10,000 severe thunderstorms, 5,000 floods and more than 1,000 tornadoes occur each year in the United States.

Volunteers needed
The Visiting Nurse Association needs Eldercare Friends volunteers in the Rowlett area to visit the homebound elderly and provide assistance with shopping, escorted transportation, errands, or other activities.
Eldercare Friends volunteer training will be held June 20 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Visiting Nurse Association's headquarters at 1440 W. Mockingbird Lane in Dallas. Volunteer training can also be scheduled by appointment.
There is no cost to attend the volunteer training class, but registration is requested. Contact Nancy Jellinek, VNA Eldercare Friends manager, at 214-689-2209 or jellinekn@vnatexas.org.
