Tennis: Langdon named Texas Coach of the Year

The past year has been a successful one for Marcus' tennis team and head coach Kelly Langdon was honored for the achievements this week when he was named the United States Professional Tennis Association Texas Coach of the Year.
Langdon - who also won in 2009 - will be honored Feb. 16 at the USPTA's annual conference and Hall of Fame induction ceremony and is eligible to claim the national award later this year.
"It's an honor to be nominated, but to win is unbelievable," Langdon said. "It's an individual coach award but it's really about the school, the district, the players, the assistants and the parents. My name is flashed around for the award but the fact is there are a ton of people involved in making it happen. It really is a team award."
Langdon also acknowledged the award wouldn't have been possible without the success of his players.
During the fall, Marcus finished second in District 5-5A to Coppell (10-8) and won in the first round over North Crowley (10-2) at regionals before falling against Lubbock Coronado.
"It's a 2012 award, which is odd because it really takes into account two seasons when you look at the spring and fall," Langdon said. "We had an outstanding spring last year and a strong fall this season and I think that combination helped. There are some other things you have to fill out as well, it's almost like you're doing a bio, but I don't know how much all of that goes into it."
In the spring, Marcus qualified six individuals for regionals (most in program history) and advanced a mixed doubles team to state for the first time.
"We had a great season," Langdon said. "The support I've received in my 12 years at Marcus has been amazing."
