12-5A GIRLS BASKETBALL: Mesquite holds off Tyler Lee to clinch playoff spot

Mesquite used a fast start and a big game from Brianna Williams to hold off Tyler Lee on Friday in a 54-49 victory.
The Skeeters improved to 8-2 in 12-5A, wrapped up a playoff berth and remained tied for second place with Rockwall, just one-half game behind idle Horn.
Mesquite set the tone at the beginning of the game with a 14-5 run to take the lead. Tyler Lee hung around, pulling to within five at halftime and then staying within striking distance in the second half, but could never quite get all the way back, with Williams' 25 points being a big reason why.
North Mesquite's playoff chances officially came to an end on Friday with a 76-20 loss to Rockwall.
The Stallions scored only two points in the opening quarter and the Yellow Jackets then bombarded them with a 32-5 run in the second.
North Mesquite, which was unable to break double digits in any quarter, got 15 points from Makqhuisha Carruth, but the rest of the team combined to score only five more.
With just three games left in the regular season, Horn is in the driver's seat for the district championship.
The Jaguars (8-1) close with the three bottom teams in 12-5A, playing at Rockwall-Heath on Tuesday, hosting Tyler Lee on Friday and closing against North Mesquite on Feb. 5.
If they sweep those games, they will clinch the district championship and the top seed in the playoffs.
A slip-up, however, could open the door for Mesquite or Rockwall, who are each just a half-game behind at 8-2. Those two teams will meet next Friday at Mesquite with the winner likely gaining the edge in playoff seeding.
The fourth and final spot is up for grabs between Longview and Tyler Lee, with those two teams scheduled to meet on Tuesday. The Lobos will clinch the final berth with a victory but the Red Raiders can move into a tie for fourth with a win.
Longview closes the season with a home game against North Mesquite next Friday and a tough challenge at Rockwall on Feb. 5. Tyler Lee must take on first-place Horn on Friday but closes on Feb. 5 against last-place Rockwall-Heath.
