West Mesquite has established itself as a perennial playoff team in recent years, but it could be argued that crosstown rival Poteet still garnered much of the area's attention.

The spotlight shifted this past season.

The Wranglers defeated the Pirates not once, but twice to win the outright District 23-4A championship for the first time in recent memory.

West Mesquite was not finished. After a first-round bye, the Wranglers blanked Molina in a 2-0 victory and then took down district rival Forney in a 2-1 win.

In the regional quarterfinals, West Mesquite had its sights set on a trip to the regional tournament, but Carrollton R.L. Turner rallied late in the contest to pull out a 2-1 victory and end the Wranglers' season with a 20-4-5 record.

The good news for West Mesquite is that the best may be still yet to come.

The Wranglers return a talented nucleus for next season, including 23-4A most valuable player Isai Velasquez, as well as first-teamers Omar Loera, Arnold Becerra and Daniel Rodriguez.
