Swimming: No contest in the pool: Dragons dominate en route to state titles

By Justin Thomas, jthomas@starlocalnews.com

Last year, a disqualification cost Southlake Carroll's girls swim and dive team a shot at sweeping the UIL Class 5A State Championships as the Lady Dragons settled for silver with the boys taking gold.

Saturday in Austin, Carroll overcame last year's disappointment by sweeping first.

The Dragons (258 points) took command of the meet early and cruised to the title ahead of San Antonio Churchill (158) and Conroe College Park (144). The Lady Dragons (275.5) dominated in the relay events and pulled away down the stretch from San Antonio Reagan (208.5) and Conroe The Woodlands (195).

The Lady Dragons quest was completed in part because of their success in the relay events. Carroll took first in all three races, setting program records in the 200-yard medley relay (1:44.22) and 400 free relay (3:27.99) in addition to setting a season-best in the 200 free relay (1:36.08).

Other local products found success at state, including competitors from Hebron, Coppell and Marcus.

Coppell's Hayden Henry, meanwhile, finished just off his personal best time in the 200 IM set at regionals (1:51.73) taking fifth at state (1:51.77).

Hebron was powered on the girls side by a gold-medal performance from Caroline Korst in the 100 backstroke (55.62) in addition to placing fourth in the 100 butterfly (56.39) for the Lady Hawks.

Hebron was represented on the boys side as well, where Joshua Clothier swam to fourth in the boys 100 free (46.28) and sixth in the 100 backstroke (51.46); and Jeff Gladu earned eighth in boys 1-meter diving (450.25).

Marcus' competitors included its girls relay teams. The 200 squad consisting of MacKenzie Thornton, Rileigh Thornton, Sarah Stone and Ali Smith finished 14th (1:40.27) while the same group placed 13th (3:36.52) in the 400 free relay.
