11-5A GIRLS BASKETBALL: Eagles crush North Garland to set up showdown for first place
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
With a potential clash for sole possession of first place in 11-5A looming on the horizon, Rowlett refused to look ahead.
Well, in the first half, anyway, as by halftime, the Eagles were well on their way to an easy 79-20 victory over North Garland on Tuesday.
Rowlett improves to 5-0 in district play, tying them with Lakeview, which was idle on Tuesday, for first place. Those two teams will meet with the 11-5A top spot on the line on Friday at Lakeview Centennial High School as the first half of the district season comes to a close.
Nearly all the Rowlett players were able to get involved, led by 20 points from Mersades Carter. Sarah Salamah scored 11 points, while Ayana Hayslett and Leah Jossett each added eight.
Sachse was busy setting up a showdown of its own on Tuesday with its 64-31 victory over South Garland. The Mustangs are now 3-2 and tied for third place with Naaman Forest, with those two teams set to meet on Friday at Naaman with sole possession of third on the line.
The Mustangs led comfortably, 30-17, at halftime and then put the game away in the third quarter when they outscored the Colonels 24-8.
Monica Dorsey scored 17 points to pace a balanced offensive attack, with Makyla Isler and Nekiya Johnson adding 10 and nine points, respectively.
While there is some separation between the top four teams and the rest of the pack, that could change in a hurry.
The loser of the game between Naaman Forest and Sachse will fall to 3-3 and could have only a one-game lead on the final playoff berth if 1-4 Garland can take care of winless North Garland on Friday.
The Eagles will have a bye on Tuesday as the second half of the district season begins, while the Mustangs will travel to take on North Garland.
SATURDAY
Dominique Oliver scored 28 points to lead Rowlett to a 57-37 victory over Naaman Forest on Saturday.
The Eagles were in a tight battle in the first half and the teams went to intermission tied at 17-17.
But Rowlett stepped on the gas in the third quarter to take a nine-point lead and outscored the Rangers 21-10 down the stretch to pull away.
WEDNESDAY
Rowlett was one of the few area teams that took an extended break for the holidays.
As a result, the rested Eagles returned to the court last Wednesday for the first time since Dec. 21.
There might have been some concern about rust from all the time away, but that was quickly erased, as Rowlett opened the game on a 23-3 run and went on to a 78-42 rout of South Garland.
Rowlett followed up its dominating start with another strong effort in the second quarter to expand the advantage to 47-16 and they were able to put it in cruise control from there.
Taylee Alexander and Oliver each scored 15 points to pace the Eagles, while Lydia Williams was also in double figures with 13.
Sachse had evened its record last Wednesday with a 57-34 win over winless Garland.
Like Rowlett, the Mustangs were keyed by a strong start, as they went on a 16-2 run to start the game and the Owls never got any closer.
Isler and Cynthia Matthews each scored 13 points and Dorsey chipped in with eight.
