Taking care of business: Lady Bobcats stay alive in district title race

Published: Wednesday, January 23, 2013 1:13 PM CST
After a Jan. 8 home loss to Frisco Lone Star, the Celina girls basketball team was in win-out mode to stay in contention for the District 10-3A crown.

The Lady Bobcats have done just that, winning three consecutive games to set up a crucial road battle with the Lady Rangers tomorrow night.

“We knew if we wanted a chance at the district championship, we had to win out,” said Jordan Davis, Celina girls head coach.

That task was made more difficult with a Friday matchup against Argyle that saw the two teams need an extra quarter to settle things. A 38-36 overtime victory was the end result for Celina after sophomore guard Alex Jones scored a game-high 14 points. Jones was joined by junior guard Sarah Cantu and sophomore forward KJ Stastny as the team’s leading scorers, with Cantu pouring in 12 points and Stastny adding nine of her own.

“Those three are what we’ve been relying on,” Davis said.

The three Lady Bobcats helped Celina close out Argyle by holding the Lady Eagles to just two points in overtime. The defensive dominance carried the team to a two-point home victory.

“That was kind of a barn burner,” Davis said. “It was a big win over a good Argyle team.”

Celina followed Friday’s victory by cruising to a 61-42 win over Carrollton Ranchview on Tuesday.

“We did a good job in that one,” Davis said. “As a coach, you’re never really satisfied, but we accomplished a lot of things.”

Cantu scored a game-high 18 points in the winning effort, while junior guard Callie Wells and Stastny reached double figures with 15 and 13 points, respectively.

The team’s most recent win gave the Lady Bobcats a 23-4 mark on the season while improving to 4-1 against district counterparts. The victory also sets up a virtual must-win game against Lone Star if Celina is to repeat as district champions.

“[Lone Star] has played us twice on our home floor and we’ve lost to them twice,” Davis said. “We’re using that as motivation and trying to get the girls fired up.”

The two teams will square off in a 6:30 p.m. contest, with the varsity boys teams following the action.
