Mesquite community notes
The first baby of the New Year at Texas Regional Medical Center at Sunnyvale, Emily Rebecca Servin, didn't make an entrance until 7:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 2. Her parents are Mayra and Saul Osbaldo Servin of Garland. She weighed 6 pounds, 11 ounces. She has two sisters, Breanna and Genesis. "I liked the treatment I received and the hospital's environment," said Mayra Servin, who gave birth to Genesis 16 months ago at TRMC-Sunnyvale and hopes for more children. Mayra said the family has yet to decide how they will celebrate Emily Rebecca's New Year Baby status in the future. - Photo courtesy TRMC-Sunnyvale

Mesquite seeks volunteers for landscape projects
The Mesquite Parks and Recreation Department is seeking volunteers to assist in a planting program of drought-tolerant landscaping at various parks and facilities.
"During the recent drought, we postponed or delayed the replanting of older landscaping or areas where vegetation had died off," said Cliff Keheley, parks and recreation director. "However, we are moving forward with plants which are more tolerant to drought conditions and will serve as examples of water-wise landscaping. This project will be a great opportunity for students, Scouts and any civic organization seeking an opportunity to give back to the community."
The target dates for the planting are February through early March. The department is seeking groups or clubs to select a Saturday during this time period to volunteer to plant a specific area or facility. All volunteer groups will need to provide the labor and tools. The department will provide plant materials, mulch and supervision. Projects range in various sizes and will be planned so all work can be completed in three hours.
Interested groups may contact Parks and Recreation Coordinator Amber Beardsley at 972-216-6419.
