Atmos Energy educates employees about texting while driving

Jeanne Brown speaking to Atmos Energy employees

DALLAS - Jan. 28, 2013 - Atmos Energy recently teamed up with the Remember Alex Brown (RAB) Foundation to promote awareness against texting and driving.  Each month Atmos Energy has safety seminars for OSHA and personal safety.

Jeanne and her husband Johnny Mac Brown founded the RAB Foundation after they lost their 17-year old daughter Alex in a car accident while texting and driving.  Jeanne and her daughter Katrina spoke about the loss of Alex Brown and educated Atmos Energy employees on the dangers of texting while driving.

“The RAB Foundation’s purpose is for people to fully understand the consequences.  We live such fast paced lives that people do not stop and think about the value of their lives.  Everyone needs to value his or her life over the current circumstances.  Technology is so accessible, but it can be a cause for concern.  Is the last text or phone call really worth risking your life?” asked Jeanne Brown.

Jeanne and Johnny Mac Brown started the RAB Foundation and travel across the nation speaking to high schools and companies about their daughter and the ramifications of texting while driving.  Johnny Mac Brown is a lubrication consultant for Hydrotex®, which allowed him flexibility to start the RAB Foundation.

“I would of never been able to start the foundation without a flexible schedule through Hydrotex,” said Johnny Mac.  Currently, Jeanne and her daughter Katrina do most of the traveling and speaking while Johnny Mac focuses more on his Hydrotex business in West Texas.

It’s imperative to the Browns to educate the public.  The Browns did not realize how much of an impact texting and driving caused when their daughter passed in 2009.

“If you text and drive, you are six times more likely to be in a wreck than a drunk driver.  In 2009, six thousand people died while texting and driving. You’re 600 percent more likely to be in a wreck and risk your life,” said Jeanne Brown.

Atmos Energy provided the Browns’ appliances and energy for their home on ABC’s Extreme Home Makeover.  Trey Cumby, president of the Safety Team at Atmos Energy, remembered this episode and thought it would be applicable for their employees to learn about the hazards of texting while driving.

“Atmos Energy was honored to help the Brown family in the past.  I thought bringing in the RAB Foundation would make more of an impact for Atmos Energy employees and hit closer to home,” said Cumby.

The Browns plan to continue spreading information about the dangers of texting and driving.  They will be at the Texas State Capital on January 29, to support Rep. Tom Craddick (Midland), to address an important traffic safety issue and implement a statewide ban on texting while driving.  Representative Craddick filed House Bill 63, the Alex Brown Memorial Act.
