10-4A GIRLS BASKETBALL: Wranglers rout Poteet in regular season finale

West Mesquite knew its chances of moving up in the district standings on the final day of the regular season were slim.
But the Wranglers left nothing to chance.
West Mesquite jumped on crosstown rival Poteet from the get-go and rolled to a 72-41 victory on Tuesday.
As expected, the Wranglers, who improved to 11-3 in 10-4A, were unable to make up any ground on second-place Highland Park, who blasted winless Terrell to secure the second seed in the playoffs.
West Mesquite (25-9) will take on 9-4A runner-up Frisco Centennial in the Class 4A bi-district playoffs next Monday or Tuesday at a time and place to be determined.
The Pirates (12-20), who finished the season with a 5-9 mark in 10-4A, had won back-to-back games but that streak was essentially ended in the first quarter when the Wranglers opened with a 19-4 run.
West Mesquite did not hold back, scoring 22 points in the second quarter and using a 19-8 spurt to open the second half that gave them a 60-24 lead.
Desirae Mitchell led the Wranglers with 18 points, with Alexus Bertrand scoring 17 and Trynise Knight adding 11. Poteet got 12 points from Shyari Cheathem and 11 from Raeghan Shaw.
Carrollton Newman Smith wrapped up the 10-4A championship with a victory over Forney on Tuesday.
Carrollton Creekview, which had already clinched the fourth seed, dismantled North Forney, 71-17, as they go into their playoff opener against 9-4A champion Frisco Liberty next week.
