10-4A GIRLS BASKETBALL: Wranglers roll over North Forney, keep district title hopes alive
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
The upcoming week is the one West Mesquite has been waiting for.
The Wranglers have been smarting since suffering back-to-back losses to Highland Park and Carrollton Newman Smith during the first half of 10-4A play and they are ready for payback.
Those games would not mean as much, though, if West Mesquite did not take care of business against the rest of the district schedule. That has not been a problem, with the latest victory coming on Tuesday in a 82-23 win over North Forney.
West Mesquite currently trails Newman Smith by two games and Highland Park by one game as the teams jockey for postseason position and the district championship.
The Wranglers were all over North Forney from the opening tip, opening a 27-6 lead after just one quarter. They extended the advantage to 52-20 through three quarters and then put an exclamation point on the victory with a 30-3 run to close it out.
Alexus Bertrand scored 18 points, Regina Garrett had 16 and Tamia Culligan added 15 for West Mesquite.
Breanna Powell and Stephanie Earlywine each scored six points for North Forney.
Poteet slipped to 3-7 in 10-4A and fell two games off the playoff pace with a 66-40 loss to Highland Park on Tuesday.
The Pirates fell victim to a 22-4 run in the second quarter and they never recovered.
Shyari Cheathem had 16 points and Brooke Bush chipped in with nine for Poteet, who is also embarking on its biggest week of the season.
The Pirates face Carrollton Creekview on Friday and with a win, can move to within a game of fourth place. They then play winless Terrell on Tuesday, and with a victory there, and a Creekview loss to Highland Park, they could find themselves tied for the final playoff spot.
A loss on Friday, however, all but ends their postseason hopes.
FRIDAY
West Mesquite took care of business on Friday with an easy 80-19 victory over winless Terrell to keep pace with the 10-4A leaders.
The Wranglers had things in hand from the start, opening a 20-point lead after one quarter and using a 15-2 run in the second to take a 39-6 lead.
West Mesquite poured it on from there, scoring 34 points in the third to run away.
Claudia Price scored 19 points, Tyra Walker had 11 and Garrett chipped in with 10 to lead the Wranglers.
Poteet kept its playoff hopes alive on Friday with a 52-27 victory over Forney.
The Pirates overcame a slow start to take a 25-14 halftime lead and then took command with a 12-2 spurt in the third quarter.
Cheathem had 20 points and Raehgan Shaw added 11 to pace the offense.
