10-4A BOYS BASKETBALL: Pirates suffer first loss at hands of North Forney

Published: Wednesday, January 9, 2013 2:28 PM CST
If the first handful of 10-4A games has shown anything, it is that the race for the district championship and the four playoff berths is completely up for grabs.

Poteet and West Mesquite each suffered their first district losses this past week, with the Pirates' 3-0 start coming to an end on Tuesday with a 52-48 loss to North Forney.

That result, combined with West the Wranglers' win over Forney and Carrollton Newman Smith's loss to Highland Park, creates a three-way tie for first place in a congested district race.

Poteet fought back once but could not do it a second time. After falling into an early hole, the Pirates battled back to tie the score at 25-25 at halftime.

But Poteet again found itself down again after scoring only five points in the third quarter, and despite picking up their level of play, they came up short. Raffaele Gaines had 12 points and Khalil Arnold added 10 for the Pirates.

The Wranglers, who were coming off a loss to Carrollton Newman Smith on Saturday, bounced back with a 100-70 victory over Forney.

West Mesquite is nearly impossible to beat when it gets its high-octane offense going and the Jackrabbits found that out the hard way.

Forney kept up for one quarter, but could not sustain it, as the Wranglers ripped off a 30-7 run in the second to take a 55-26 lead into halftime.

Braylon Rayson had 22 points to lead a quartet of West Mesquite players in double figures. Nate Davis scored 19 points, while Jordon Johnson and Ben Scott each tallied 15.

The Wranglers and Pirates will meet in a huge game on Friday with at least a share of the 10-4A lead on the line at Poteet High School.

While the winner of the game will stay atop the standings, the loser could drop back into a crowded pack, as Highland Park, Carrollton Creekview and North Forney are all 2-2.

West Mesquite will also play at Creekview on Tuesday while the Pirates will host co-district leader Carrollton Newman Smith.

SATURDAY

Poteet had pushed its district winning streak to three games in a row on Saturday with a 63-31 victory over Terrell.

The Pirates jumped on the Tigers early, opening a 10-point lead in the first quarter and pushing the advantage to 28-15 by halftime.

Poteet then ended Terrell's hopes in the third quarter, using a 20-3 run to put the game away.

Arnold scored 12 points, with Gaines, Verkedric Vaughns and Chris Murphy each adding nine.

West Mesquite suffered its first setback in 10-4A play with a 78-66 loss to Carrollton Newman Smith on Saturday.

The Wranglers fell into an early eight-point hole, but rallied back with a big third quarter to take a 52-50 lead.

But Newman Smith exploded in the final frame, doubling up West Mesquite, 28-14, to run away with the win.

While there were four Wranglers in double figures, they were the only players that scored in the game. Rayson led the way with 23 points. Jalen Etienne had 16 points, Johnson tallied 15 and Tyrone Davis chipped in with 12.

THURSDAY

West Mesquite and Poteet each started 2013 on the right foot as each picked up district victories last Thursday.

The Wranglers rallied past Highland Park for a 64-61 victory while the Pirates took down Carrollton Creekview, 44-36.

West Mesquite bided its time early on but came on strong to hand the Scots their second district loss in a row.

Highland Park had used a big second quarter to take a 28-22 lead into halftime, but the Wranglers got back to within four going to the fourth quarter and outscored the Scots 23-16 down the stretch.

Rayson had 26 points and Tyrone Davis added 14 to lead West Mesquite.

Poteet used a strong start and a good finish to polish off Creekview.

The Pirates opened the game on a 13-4 run only to watch that advantage get whittled down to a point at the end of three quarters.

But behind 23 points from Raffaele Gaines and 10 from Nathaniel Gaines, Poteet regained control in the fourth to hold on for the win.
