McKinney, Texas -- Raytheon’s Radical Reciters, McKinney Chamber Wired Wordsmiths, Mathsters of the Universe, A+ Orthographers, and Tate-er Tots: A Boy, His Wife and His Mother-in-Law.
These are just a few of the teams that have participated in the McKinney Education Foundation’s (MEF) annual Spelling Bee, which in recent years has been described as one part competition, and two parts stage comedy.
Mayor Loughmiller has been known to crack jokes in between rounds and last year, Raytheon’s Radical Reciters’ supporters jumped up in the middle of the contest to run laps around their lunch table in hopes of cheering their team to victory (and winning the coveted Spirit Stick). In 2012, Sara Thomas’s skills as an amusing emcee added to the liveliness, and promises to again as she returns to host the 2013 edition.
“From what I’ve heard, it’s nothing like your typical Spelling Bee,” states MEF’s new Executive Director, Edie Heinicke. “Being a good speller is not a requirement. Contestants can rely on their teammates, or on mulligans to pass on difficult words. It’s all about having fun while raising money for MEF and our Scholarship Program. Everyone I’ve talked to is really looking forward to it!”
Table and team sponsors already signed-up to participate include: Legacy Bank, Encore, Heritage, Sunrise Rotary, Torchmark, Independent Bank, Academics Plus, Tomes Auto Group, City of McKinney, FC Dallas and Raytheon. Additional underwriters of the event: Master Bee Keeper: Torchmark. Luncheon Sponsor: Independent Bank. Elimination Gong Sponsor: Nissan of McKinney. Centerpiece Sponsor: Crump’s Gardens.
It’s not too late to join in the fun! The luncheon event begins at 11:30 a.m. and runs until 1 p.m. at the Eldorado Country Club. Tables of 10 are $300 and individual seats are $30 with a limited number of 3 person teams available for $600. Please visit www.MmEeFf.com or call Edie Heinicke at 469-302-6314 for details on how you or your organization can participate.
