Plano boys, Allen girls swimmers victorious in regional redux

ROCKWALL -- In many ways, the Region III-5A Swimming and Diving Championships mirrored the District 9-5A Meet two weeks ago.

That was apparent everywhere from the cast of 9-5A swimmers who punched their tickets to state, to the manner in which the Plano Senior boys and Allen girls captured their respective regional championships Saturday at the Rockwall ISD Aquatic Center.

"I can't express how proud I am of those girls," said Brent Mitchell, Allen head coach. "Their goal has been state all year, to get as many relays and individuals as they could to state and finish as a top-five team. They've put themselves in that position and now we have to finish it off in two weeks."

Out with a bang: Adams, Lady Titans victorious in home finale

Published: Tuesday, February 5, 2013 11:59 PM CST
FRISCO -- Tuesday's contest against Heritage marked the final home game for the seniors of Centennial's girls basketball team.

They couldn't have chosen a better last impression, earning a 68-46 victory in each team's regular season finale.

"It was a fitting way to end it for [the seniors]," said Wesley Charles, Centennial head coach. "They all played well too."

Headlining that group was guard McKenzie Adams, who poured in a game-high 36 points on 15-of-23 shooting.

Adams set the game's tone early in the first quarter with three transition jumpers that helped give Centennial a 14-7 advantage after eight minutes.

The Lady Titans pushed that lead to 25-10 at the 3:05 mark of the second quarter when Adams assisted on a 3-pointer by junior forward Mary Robbins. However, the Lady Coyotes followed the Robbins three with a quick 7-0 run that was capped with a jumper from freshman guard Michela Brantley.

Centennial would carry a 27-17 lead into the locker room after Adams finished a putback layup in the final seconds of the second quarter. It was Adams who also led a third-quarter attack that saw the Lady Titans extend their lead from four points to 23 over a span of less than six minutes.

"We preach to our kids that the most important part of the game is the start of the third quarter," Charles said. "We've been really good in those situations this year."

Adams scored 14 in the third frame, including a personal 9-0 run moments after Heritage trimmed the deficit to just four points on a 3-pointer from junior guard Montoria Tripp.

The quarter ended after a pair of shots from downtown by sophomore guard Cydney Sutherland made it 49-26.

Both teams traded buckets for a majority of the fourth quarter before Adams, senior guard Saige Gibbs and senior forward Dian Lewis left the game to separate standing ovations from the Centennial crowd.

"Our seniors know this is their last chance to put a gold basketball in the trophy case," Charles said.

The group has indelibly left their mark on the program after becoming the first team in Centennial's history to finish second place in the district and also the first to win 28 games. Adams reached the 2,000-point career mark earlier in the season while Gibbs passed the 1,000-point mark herself.

"I think we're playing our best basketball right now," Charles said. "That wasn't the case at this point last year."

The Lady Titans finished the season with an 11-3 mark against 9-4A counterparts and enter the postseason as the two seed from the district. The team will now take on West Mesquite in a first-round matchup at a place and time yet to be determined.

"It's going to be a battle," Charles said.

Meanwhile, Heritage fell to 22-9 with Tuesday's loss and finished with a 9-5 mark in district. The Lady Coyotes were led in scoring by junior guard Taylor Jackson, who finished with 13 points in the game after scoring 11 in the fourth quarter.

Tripp added 12 of her own to become the only other Heritage player in double figures.
