10-4A GIRLS BASKETBALL: Newman Smith clinches share of district crown with second win over Wranglers
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
West Mesquite's streak of consecutive district championships offically came to an end on Tuesday night.
Carrollton Newman Smith snagged at least a share of the 10-4A's top spot by defeating the Wranglers for the second time this season, 65-53.
West Mesquite actually slipped back into third place at 9-3, a game behind Highland Park, but they already know they are headed back to the playoffs where the season starts anew.
But Newman Smith began to accelerate in the third quarter, pushing the advantage to eight points and West Mesquite was unable to stage a serious run in the fourth.
Alexus Bertrand and Claudia Price scored 20 and 16 points, respectively, for the Wranglers. The Trojans got 23 points from Alexis Nezianya and 12 from Faith Rolen in the winning effort.
Poteet might be out of the playoff race, but they still have pride and the future to play for and they showed that on Tuesday with a 80-23 blasting of Terrell.
The Pirates were never threatened, opening a 21-6 lead after one quarter and outscoring the Tigers 38-11 in the second half. Raeghan Shaw outscored Terrell by herself with 26 points. Shyari Cheathem had 23 points, while Brooke Bush and Kyla Nelson each added eight as Poteet improved to 4-8 in district play.
With one week left in the regular season, there are still some things to be determined.
Newman Smith will wrap up sole possession of the 10-4A title with a victory over second-place Highland Park on Friday. Even if they should slip up, it is highly doubtful the Trojans would fall to winless Terrell in the season finale.
If Newman Smith defeats the Scots, and West Mesquite takes care of Forney, those two teams would be tied for second place and they split the head-to-head series. The Wranglers close at Poteet and Highland Park finishes up with Terrell, meaning a play-in game could come into effect if the teams remain deadlocked.
Carrollton Creekview lost to Highland Park on Tuesday but still could have sewn up the fourth playoff spot pending North Forney's result against Forney.
Even if the Falcons emerge from that game with a win, the Mustangs can clinch on Friday with a victory over last-place Terrell.
