10-4A BOYS BASKETBALL: West Mesquite, Poteet, notch huge victories

Just three days after suffering tough losses, both West Mesquite and Poteet picked up key wins on Friday in 10-4A play.
The Wranglers moved into sole possession of second place with a 7-2 record by downing Highland Park, 61-52.
West Mesquite will have a chance to move back into a tie for first place if it can beat Carrollton Newman Smith on Tuesday.
Highland Park, who slipped back into third place with the loss, made a small run in the fourth quarter but it was not enough.
Poteet, meanwhile, moved back into a tie for the fourth and final playoff berth with a 52-45 victory over Carrollton Creekview on Friday.
The Pirates held the Mustangs to just six points in the opening quarter and had a 34-24 lead through three periods. Chris Murphy had 19 points and Raffaele Gaines added 12 for Poteet. Alex Rincon had 17 points to lead Creekview, which saw its playoff hopes take a big hit as it fell to 3-6.
In addition to the showdown for first place on Tuesday, Poteet has a good chance at a victory against winless Terrell, while Highland Park can all but eliminate Creekview from the postseason race with a win in their meeting.
