Shoven announces candidacy for LISD

Published: Wednesday, January 30, 2013 11:46 AM CST
Wednesday, Paige Shoven, a 13-year resident of Lewisville, filed to run for Place 3 on the Lewisville ISD Board of Trustees.

Shoven and her husband of 12 years, Rick, have two daughters -- Elizabeth, 11, and Kara, 8, in the LISD school system.

"I learned so much while campaigning last year, it was a great experience," Shoven said. "My love for the children of LISD did not stop when the election votes came in."

Over the past year, Shoven has attended every school board meeting, participated in the INSIDE LISD program, served on the facilities committee for the district, volunteered with the LISD Council of PTAs, both local chapters of PTA and stays active in church.

In past years, she served as PTA president at her local elementary school and was honored with the lifetime PTA award. She has served the last five years on the Council of PTAs in a number of roles, including first vice president.

In 2011, she was named Outstanding Manager of the Year for U.S. Vision, where she is employed as an optical manager.

Shoven said many of the issues facing the district include supporting the educators while they implement the strategic design (a community-wide initiative to change the way children learn in LISD schools), rezoning of Flower Mound feeder schools, completion of the 2008 bond projects (including finalizing the Flower Mound and Marcus high school ninth-grade centers), rebuilding two schools in The Colony feeder pattern and ensuring the buildings are capable of supporting the technology the students are using on a daily basis.

Other issues include growing concerns in Austin over the amount of funding schools will receive in the future, STAAR/EOC testing requirements and the talk of vouchers and how it will affect the public school system.

"LISD is a great district we should all be proud of," Shoven said. "If elected, I would be honored to represent one of the best districts in the state."
