Football: Dragons saw through Timber Creek 65-7

Published: Tuesday, October 9, 2012 4:44 PM CDT
SOUTHLAKE- Southlake Carroll got off to the fast start head coach Hal Wasson was looking for against Keller Timber Creek and never looked back in their 65-7 victory Friday night.

"It's a tribute to our preparation," he said. "We always say it's about us. We've got to set the tone and make ourselves better."

Carroll (4-1, 2-0 in District 4-5A) jumped out to the fast start it has become accustomed to having, using an eight-play drive in under two minutes to jump on top of the Falcons (1-4, 1-1), 7-0. The touchdown came on a reception by sophomore receiver Ryan Agnew who raced up the sideline on a quick pass from senior quarterback Kenny Hill.

Hill, a Texas A&M commit, had another stellar night, passing for 175 yards on 15-of-19 attempts and scoring three touchdowns. Hill also added another score on the ground, rushing for 56 yards on four attempts.

Carroll's next drive had a different journey, but ended in the end zone just as the first one did. Junior running back A.J. Ezzard took control of the possession, running three times and finishing with a 3-yard plunge for the Dragons score and a 14-0 lead.

Ezzard was able to give balance to Wasson's offensive attack during the game, rushing 15 times for 128 yards and two scores before halftime.

It did not take Carroll long to strike again, scoring on its third consecutive drive. Hill's only rushing touchdown of the night was a display of poor tackling by the Falcons as the quarterback was able to shake off three arm tackles and run down the sideline for a 33-yard score and a 21-0 lead.

"They came in 1-0, so it was definitely important to get off to a fast start," Hill said. "We just had to stay focused and work hard."

The Carroll defense did its part, picking off Falcons' senior quarterback Taylor Jones and gave the offense the chance to put up four touchdowns before the first quarter expired.

That chance was capitalized upon on a wide-open fade pass from Hill to senior receiver Tanner Jacobson for a 7-yard score. The route was officially on as the Dragons piled up 28 points before ten minutes had passed in the game and surrendered none.

A three-and-out on Timber Creek's next possession once again gave Carroll a short field for Hill and the offense to add more before halftime. Three straight passes moved the ball 42 yards and into the end zone as junior receiver Luke Timian tiptoed at the backline to grant the Dragons a 35-0 cushion.

Another turnover by the Falcons lead to Ezzard's final score, courtesy of another 3-yard dive, and after a 1-yard run by junior running back Luke Kissick, the Dragons took a 49-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

After gaining a total of 386 yards in the first half, along with 22 first downs, Ezzard knew just who to thank for the offensive outburst.

"Without the offensive line, I'm nothing," he said. "I always appreciate what they do for me and Kenny."

Carroll added two more touchdowns from Agnew of 1 and 5 yards, respectively, before the Dragons defense added a safety and finalized their scoring at 65 points.

"Consistency and mental toughness are all part of us winning," Wasson said. "No matter who's out there, they've got a job to do. It's good to see those guys get out there and get a lot of reps."

Timber Creek scored one touchdown with two minutes left in the fourth quarter, but the damage had already been done as Carroll won, 65-7.

The Dragons hope their winning ways continue as they dive deeper into 4-5A play Friday against North Richland Hills at 7:30 p.m. in Southlake.
