Rowlett-based Lake Pointe Medical Center (LPMC) recently received the 2013 Founders Award from The Bridge Breast Network for its efforts in helping uninsured women fight breast cancer. The two major criteria used to select the finalists and winners include the number of clients served and the amount of services donated within the year.

"No woman should die of breast cancer due to lack of financial resources. The Bridge Breast Network helps the many women that can't get a mammogram due to lack of financial resources," said Terry Pothier, Lake Pointe Breast Center and Lake Pointe Cancer Center RN and nurse navigator. "They pay for mammograms and the treatment of cancer up to reconstruction. They work with doctors and facilities to get the procedures done at no cost to the women."

Lake Pointe has partnered with The Bridge Breast Network since 2011 to ensure women without insurance have access to early detection services for breast cancer. In less than 12 months, LPMC accepted 180 referrals from The Bridge Breast Network. As a result, seven women who had not had a mammogram in more than two years found their breast cancer and were able to receive treatment.

"They get charged the minimum rate for the procedures so their money can go further," Pothier said. "The work they do is incredibly important. One in eight women will get breast cancer. If we can find the cancer in stage one, then the survival rate is 98 percent. It is so important for women to get their annual mammograms."

Pothier said that women should begin getting the annual exams at the age of 40 unless there is a history of cancer in the family; in that case, she should start annual exams at 35.

"Breast cancer can be curable and treatable if it is detected early," Pothier said.

Each year The Bridge Breast Network presents the Founders Award to an organization or individual whose work exemplifies the mission and vision of the program and its founders.

"Winning the award was so exciting. We didn't know we were getting it until they announced it," Pothier said.
