Eagles sweep 10-5A soccer openers

The Allen boys and girls soccer teams opened district Tuesday night and each were victorious.

The Lady Eagles, who closed non-district Friday with a 2-0 win over Lovejoy, kept the momentum going with a 1-0 triumph against Plano East on the strength of a goal from freshman Kaylee Davis.

The Allen boys didn't allow a goal against East either, with Kevin Walls tickling the twine twice for a 2-0 victory.

The Eagles return to the pitch Friday with the boys welcoming Plano West to Ford Middle School at 7:30 p.m. Their female counterparts will also play West, traveling to face the No. 2 team in the nation at the same time from Clark East.

Allen opens playoffs with Jesuit

Despite Tuesday's 55-49 loss to Plano West in the regular season finale, Allen boys basketball enters the playoffs as the No. 2 seed from District 10-5A.

The Eagles will face Jesuit in the bi-district round, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Plano West, in search of the program's first Class 5A playoff win.

Tripucka joining Aggies

Allen senior punter Shane Tripucka will be joining Texas A&M as a preferred walk-on.

Tripucka had been on the Aggies' radar for some time as he attended a kicking camp in College Station over the summer. That gave A&M an advantage over Sam Houston State, where he was offered a scholarship, and preferred walk-on status at Texas, Texas Tech and Boston College.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pounder averaged 42 yards per punt in 2012 as part of an Eagles squad that won the Class 5A Division I State Championship.

Crews qualifies for state

Lovejoy's Sydney Crews will be the Wet Leopards' lone representative at the Class 4A Swimming and Diving State Championships.

Crews advanced after placing third in the 100-yard backstroke Saturday at the Region 3-4A Championships. Her time of 1:00.12 was among the eight fastest non-automatic qualifying times in the state. Crews is seeded 11th out of 16 swimmers in her event at state, which is Feb. 22-23 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center in Austin.

The Lovejoy girls team placed fifth at regionals (130 points) with the boys in seventh (105).

Stormin' Norman

The Allen track and field team enjoyed a productive stay in Norman, Okla. over the weekend for the Oklahoma Indoor Meet.

The Allen boys finished second and the Lady Eagles captured third.

First-place performances were turned in by Taylor Dunlap (400 meters); Kennedy Knight (200); Dunlap, Kaylen Rettig, Knight and Courtney Land (400 relay); Cameron Hartsfield, Jalen Henley, Mayomi Olootu and Chad Adams (800 relay); Hartsfield (200); D.J. Lee, Evans Jones, Grant Finney and Gilson Umunnakwe (1,600 relay).

Allen returns to the track Saturday at 8 a.m. from Wilkerson-Sanders Stadium in Rockwall for the Yellowjacket Relays.

Hall of Honor nominations

Though the Allen ISD began enshrining people into its Hall of Honor when Eagle Stadium opened, the district is still seeking future nominees.

Candidates must be ex-athletes, employees, teams or supporters of AISD. They must have graduated from Allen at least 10 years ago and demonstrated good character throughout their post-high school athletic career. If a nominee is deceased, a representative of his/her family may accept the honor.

Nomination forms can be found at: allenisd.org.

Nominations should include as much detail as possible to help choose the best candidates. The selection committee will name recipients at an annual AISD Hall of Honor banquet.
