Tennis: Kings of the court: Coppell claims district title
By Justin Thomas, jthomas@starlocalnews.com
The past week has been a tumultuous one for Coppell High School as the community had to deal with the losses of two students, including football player and captain Jacob Logan, whose body was discovered Thursday in Possum Kingdom Lake after Logan disappeared last Sunday in a drowning incident.
And just as was the case with the football team Friday in its contest against Flower Mound, Coppell's tennis team was looking to put the tough week in the past and lift the spirits of the school and city with a strong showing last week in the District 5-5A Tournament in Logan's honor.
So it was fitting that not only did Coppell go on to claim the district title, the final two matches in Saturday's final against Marcus (a 10-7 win) were boys singles player Jacob Villanueva and girls singles player Logan Astudillo.
"All of the distractions made it tough to focus and get in a good week of practice. But in the end, I think it made us stronger and we didn't want to let anything slip away this week. I'm really proud of them."
On Oct. 2, Coppell held off Marcus, 10-9. But on Saturday, Coppell could breathe just a bit easier with its 10-7 victory.
In doubles, Coppell received wins from Julianne Cauley and Logan Astudillo on the girls side (6-4, 6-4), as well as Zixiao Li and Kihwan Lee (6-2, 6-2) and Tyler Stayer and Danny Bush (6-0, 6-1) on the boys side. Abby White and David Wittkower also won in mixed doubles (6-0, 6-3).
"We really weren't expecting lose at boys No. 3 doubles," Jackson said. "But we got a couple of other nice wins and handled them in our mixed match and it worked out well."
In singles, winners were Astudillo (6-3, 7-5) and Cauley (6-0, 6-0) on the girls side, while boys winners were Stayer (6-3, 6-1), Li (6-2, 6-4), Josh Abaya (4-6, 6-1, 6-2) and Lee (6-2, 6-4).
"In girls, [Marcus' Preethi Kasilingam] really brought her best tennis and won a great match," Jackson said. "And Molly Fisher played a great match at No. 2 singles as well. But our No. 3 and 4 girls played the same girls we played the first time and the difference was Logan stepped up and won. And Juliane played a girl that she beat in three sets in the regular season and won this time (6-0, 6-0). I guess she wanted to make a senior statement."
Stayer also won his singles match against an opponent he had previously lost to (Sebastian Langdon).
"He was very focused and confident," Jackson said. "Xixiao played well, too, and has been very dependable for us and Jacob was winning his match when we all came off the court."
Coppell will find out its opponent at regionals Thursday at a seeding meeting before opening the tournament against an opponent to be determined Friday in Abilene.
Volleyball: Cowgirls win district too
District titles didn't end with Coppell tennis as the volleyball team also wrapped up the 5-5A crown last week.
Coppell (8-1) leads Flower Mound (7-2) by one match entering Tuesday's finale against Lewisville (results not available of press time) but hold the tiebreaker over the Jaguars by virtue of sweeping the head-to-head meetings.
Last week, the Cowgirls picked up sweeps over Marcus (25-10, 25-22, 25-20) and Denton Ryan (25-10, 25-13, 25-13).
Coppell will begin its Class 5A State Title defense with a bi-district round contest Monday or Tuesday against an opponent to be determined.
