Plano public safety officer injured on U.S. 75

A Plano public safety officer suffered non-life threatening injuries after his public safety pickup truck was rear-ended by a motorist Thursday afternoon.
Nicholas Magiera was assisting a disabled motorist on U.S. 75 near Legacy Drive shortly after 1 p.m. when the incident occurred. Magiera was inside the cab of the pickup with his overhead lights activated at the time of the accident. He suffered minor injuries to his neck and back.
"[It was] nothing major at all," said Officer David Tilley of the Plano Police Department. "In fact, from what I understood they transported him to the hospital, but he was actually out there on the scene walking around and he was actually ... calling for the unit to help him."
"What I was being told was the vehicle was in the main lanes of traffic and somehow ended up on the shoulder," he said. "That's what we're trying to figure out, [how] that happened."
Public safety officers help Plano police in multiple capacities, including handling roadway assistance calls.
Tilley said motorists should always follow the law by reducing their speeds and moving over a lane if they see emergency vehicles on the side of the road.
"It's pretty much that simple," he said.
