Latham to seek re-election for LISD

Published: Wednesday, January 30, 2013 10:15 AM CST
Brenda Latham, who sits on Place 5 Board of Trustees for Lewisville ISD, announced Monday that she will be seeking re-election to that position in the May 11 election.

Pointing to the progress made in her first term regarding fiscal issues, as well as policy matters of importance to the parents, teachers and students of LISD, Latham expressed confidence in her

decision.

“This board has proven we can work together to bring resolution to the critical issues which impact our teachers’ ability to do their job, and our students’ ability to perform at their maximum, while also respecting the costs apportioned to the community. With the ever increasing taxes from federal, state and local entities I understand the importance of appreciating what taxpayers of LISD have provided, and I am committed to maximizing the benefit received from each dollar.” Latham said.

During her first term with LISD, Latham points to the many successful changes that have taken place such as:

*?Hiring a new superintendent to take LISD from “good” to excellent

*?Balancing the 2010-11 budget without a tax increase or invading the district’s reserve funds

*?Reorganization of central administration resulting in headcount reduction and overall increase in efficiency

*?Increasing teacher pay by 3 percent and implementing a new pay structure for all LISD employees

*?Tremendous efforts to improve communication and increase transparency, such as major improvements in the districts website, and implementation of committees involving staff, students, community members and business leaders

*?Facilitating concept models and implementation of a Strategic Design for LISD to engage students in a way which will transform their education

*?Commissioning a demographic study and facility assessment which provide factual data leading to the decision to redirect 2008 bond funds to address campuses of the district in need of replacement as well as prioritize campuses in need of repair

Building on the experiences of her first term, Latham said she looks forward to continuing her policy of being receptive to campus invitations, engaging the administration for input on resolutions regarding policy matters before the board and reaching out to the community for their vital input.

“It has been an honor to serve the students, teachers and citizens of the various communities in the Lewisville Independent School District in my first term as LISD Trustee, Place 5. I am looking forward to continuing to work with LISD, North Texas Regional Consortium (NTRC) and Texas High Performing Schools Consortium (THPSC) in our efforts to transform education. I also want to continue to work with our administration to strengthen training for our educators during this transformation. We can do a better job on teacher pay in LISD and we are working to improve this area, showing full faith in our teachers. Our ongoing efficiency study will enable us to further streamline and remove budget items that are costly. This will move us closer to the goal of excellence. The changes which have taken place over the last three years are monumental but most historical events involved monumental tasks accomplished by ordinary people who were determined to make a difference and I am determined to make a difference for LISD.”
