Boys and girls soccer: Carroll alone in first

Published: Tuesday, February 19, 2013 5:45 PM CST
First place in District 4-5A belongs to Southlake Carroll as the halfway point nears with the Dragons the lone boys soccer squad without a loss on their resume in district.

Carroll (5-0-1) entered Tuesday's contest against Haltom leading Keller (4-1-1) by three points, including a 2-0 result over the Indians last Tuesday.

"We played very well," said Greg Oglesby, Carroll head coach. "We were focused and did a good job against a Keller team that hadn't lost a match before that."

Following a scoreless first half, Carroll got on the board when Winslow Horne connected with Brad Rostron. Later in the second, Walker Beasley connected with Tommy Price for a good look that denied, but Shane Carpenter was there for the rebound to provide insurance.

"We actually got the better of the play in the first half but just didn't score," Oglesby said. "But we were able to put in a couple in the second half. In the last 15 minutes, Keller really got after us and backed us against the wall. We did well and were fortunate to get out with a shutout."

The team continued Friday where it got past Fossil Ridge, 2-1.

The Dragons didn't take long to get on the board, with Price scoring four minutes in off a throw-in play.

The Panthers evened the contest midway through the half, but the Dragons regained the advantage after the break when Rostron scored off a breakaway.

"We had a nice goal early but they got it right back after we made a defensive mistake," Oglesby said. "But we came back and played very well in the second half."

While Carroll picked up a pair of victories, the week still proved costly.

Against Keller, the Dragons lost senior Horne for the remainder of the season with a broken humerus. Friday, the squad lost the services of Walker Beasley for what is expected to be two weeks.

"Tuesday was very sad," Oglesby said. "Winslow was a mainstay and a two-year starter on varsity for us. He was a great player and very heady player and we're really going to miss him. But it's an opportunity for some other players to step up and fill the void."

The Dragons continue at 7 p.m. Friday at Keller Central before hosting Haltom at the same time Tuesday.

Girls soccer: Defense dominating

Monday, for the first time in District 4-5A competition, Carroll's girls soccer team surrendered a goal. But that didn't stop the Lady Dragons from improving to 7-0 as the team secured a 4-1 margin over Haltom.

Sophie Groff netted a pair of goals, while Grace Cory and Meghan Murphy also scored for Carroll.

The Lady Dragons were coming off a 7-0 win Friday against Fossil Ridge that saw five players score, including two apiece from Groff and Jordan Connors. Cory, Julia Dyche and Payton Gruenewald also scored.

Carroll, ranked No. 12 in the nation by the Elite Soccer Report, continues at home at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Keller Central before going on the road Tuesday at Keller Timber Creek.
