'These things are fun, and fun is good': Primrose School celebrates Read Across America Day with Cat in the Hat

Primrose School of Eldorado in McKinney joined communities throughout the country Saturday to celebrate Read Across America Week in support of childhood literacy.
The private preschool's "Bagels & Books Breakfast" featured arts and craft stations, readings from Dr. Seuss's "Cat in the Hat" and a visit from the Texas Rangers' mascot, Captain, who posed for photos and signed autographs.
Families also perused the book fair, at which the school offered children's favorites for personal purchase or as donations to Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Collin County. A total of 153 books were collected for the organization, which serves as Guardian ad Litem for all children in foster care in the county.
Visitors also had an opportunity to meet Chester the Cat, the inspiration for local author L.C. Tobey's book, "Chester of Chestnut Square."
Terri Monk, Chestnut Square Historic Village's director of education, who offered copies of Tobey's book for purchase, accompanied Chester. Proceeds from book sales went to help Chestnut Square and the Arts & Music Guild.
"Our philosophy and literacy goals at Primrose directly align with Read Across America Day, and it was truly a great idea for the community and the entire country to establish a regular reading routine to promote early childhood education and celebrate the power of literacy together," said Summer Wolfe, executive director of Primrose School of Eldorado, in an emailed statement. "We want the excitement to continue this week as we lead up to Read Across America Day. We also are very grateful to everyone who participated."
