WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Stallion baseball, softball teams looking to get on winning track

Published: Tuesday, February 26, 2013 4:11 PM CST
It has been a rough start to the season for the North Mesquite baseball and softball teams.

The Stallion baseball team was able to pick up their first win of the season on Saturday while the softball team continues its search to do the same.

The highlight for North Mesquite in the Rawlings Lake Cities Classic came in the tournament finale as it took out some frustrations on Arlington in a 14-2 victory, its first in five games this season.

Chris Peterson picked up the victory on the mound, with Thomas Oberg earning the save, as they limited Arlington to just two runs on six hits.

Oberg and Hunter Benavides doubled as the Stallions banged out 11 hits in the game.

The win allowed North Mesquite to gain some confidence after four previous losses at the tournament.

The Stallions got extra base hits from Hunter Jenkins and Bobby Albair but it was not enough in a 15-2 loss to Lewisville in the opener on Thursday.

Oberg doubled and Matt Cruz tripled but North Mesquite was again unable to keep pace on Friday in a 14-5 loss to Denton Guyer.

The Stallions also suffered a 10-0 loss to Allen and a 5-1 setback to Plano East before breaking through against Arlington.

The North Mesquite softball team slipped to 0-8 on the year after suffering through some tough times at the Mesquite ISD Invitational.

The Stallions' offense started to get hot on the final day of the event on Saturday. They took the early lead against Duncanville but could not hold on in a 16-2 loss.

Katelyn White had a pair of hits, Tiara Mickens doubled and Aurora Reyna had a RBI.

In its previous game, Reyna had a run-scoring double, White added two more hits and Jailene Perez and Meghan Ragsdale also drove in runs in a 15-8 loss to Mansfield Summit.

North Mesquite's closest call came in a 3-2 loss to Molina on Friday. After falling behind early, the Stallions rallied with two runs in the fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2. However, Molina was able to scratch across a run in the sixth to win it.

North Mesquite got extra base hits from Mickens, Jennifer Bradshaw and Kierra Townsend, with Perez adding a RBI.
