For the second time in three seasons, the girls UIL Class 5A State Swimming and Diving Championships came down to the final event.
This time, however, the Lady Dragons emerged victorious.
Carroll's 400-yard freestyle relay team consisting of Lindsay Schultz, Emily Zapinski, Alexa Baran and Rebecca Upton finished with silver (3:29.47), giving the Lady Dragons (235) the title ahead of Reagan (189.50), who narrowly edged Humble Kingwood (189) for second. Kingwood and Reagan finished third and fifth, respectively, in the final event giving Carroll's girls their second consecutive state title.
With their triumphs, Carroll becomes the first team in Texas history to win consecutive state titles in both boys and girls swimming in the same seasons. The Lady Dragons nearly had three in a row as well, but settled for second in 2011 after being disqualified in the final race.
Murphy was named the boys and girls Coach of the Year as was Carroll's Carolyn Hryorchuk in boys and girls diving. Jonathan Roberts was tabbed Male Swimmer of the Year for the Dragons, while Bryce Klein earned Diver of the Year.
Other local finishers on the boys side included Hebron in 14th (55), Coppell in 32nd (14) and Flower Mound in 57th (2.5). Girls action saw Flower Mound in 17th (38), Hebron in 24th (29.50) and Marcus in 36th (16).
Carroll opened the meet strongly with both their girls and boys 200 medley relay squads picking up points. The girls squad (Emily Gibson, MacKenzie Leonard, Sydney Wheeler and Casey Rose) opened the meet with bronze (1:47.20) before the boys unit (Jonathan Roberts, John Remetta, Jake Tovey and Jacob Elieson) picked up silver (1:33.72) behind The Woodlands (1:32.41).
After Zapinski grabbed her second medal in just three events with bronze in the 200 free (1:49.34), Roberts procured Carroll's first gold of the final day by taking first in the boys 200 free (1:36.34) and setting a state record in process. He would later add another first-place finish in the 500 free (4:20.08), where teammate Connor Dobbs touched in third (4:30.16) before earning a third gold as part of the 400 free relay (3:04.10), where he joined Grayson Magruder, Remetta and Tovey (program record).
Klein also set a state record with his performance in 1-meter diving (622.05), where he beat the previous record of 593.60 (2008).
Other medalists for Carroll included Remetta with third in the 200 IM (1:49.91), Lauren Crown with silver in girls diving (489.40), Gibson in second in the 100 butterfly (55.73, program record) and the girls 200 free relay team (Schultz, Zapinski, Ashlin Anderson and Gibson; 1:35.89) in second. Gibson also set a program record in the 50 free (23.61) but had to settle for fifth.
The Dragons weren't the only local squad returning home with hardware as Hebron's Joshua Clothier notched gold in the 50 free (20.69) and silver in the 100 free (45.40), while Caroline Korst just missed out for the Lady Hawks by placing fourth in the girls 100 butterfly (56.65) and 100 backstroke (57.05).
Flower Mound's Jenna Beaury picked up silver in the girls 100 breaststroke (1:04.47), while Marcus' Mackenzie Willborn nabbed bronze in girls diving (464.75). Coppell's scoring was fueled by Hayden Henry, who finished fifth in the boys 200 IM (1:50.62).
Other local swimmers included Flower Mound's girls 200 medley relay in 12th (McKenzie Murphy, Beaury, Riley Archer and Kristen Whitaker), Whitaker in 12th in the girls 50 free (24.47) and Alecia McGillivray in 11th in the girls 500 free (4:59.75).
In Class 4A, Highland Park (284.50) took the top honors on the girls side, while Houston Stratford took first in boys (212) ahead of Frisco Wakeland (203) with Newman Smith in 36th (15).
For the Trojans, Connor Shackelford placed fourth in boys diving (309.70).
