The Mesquite Rotary Club hosted its annual "Four Way Test" Speech Contest at the Dallas Athletic Club on Feb. 26. Contestants from all Mesquite I.S.D. high schools, Sunnyvale High School, and Dallas Christian School participated in the event. Each student gave a 5- to 7-minute original speech about applying the Rotary Four Way Test in our everyday relationship with other people and students.

The simple, four-question ethical test of all that we say and do was developed in 1932 by Herbert J.Taylor, who became the 1954-55 Rotary International president. The questions are, "Is it the truth?"; "Is it fair to all concerned?"; "Will it build goodwill and better friendships?"; and "Will it be beneficial to all concerned?" Taking first place in the contest was Matthew Stell of Mesquite High School. Na’Teisha Choice of West Mesquite High School took second place, and the third place winner was Adam Beasley of Dallas Christian School. The winners received prizes of $250, $150, and $100.

The local winner will now go on to compete at the Rotary District 5810 Four Way Test Speech Contest, contending for a top prize of $1,000.  That will be held on Saturday, April 27.  Also participating in the contest were Charles Bates of North Mesquite High School, Seth Quiroz of Poteet High School, Marc Webb of John Horn High School, and Neena Johnson of Sunnyvale High School.

Rotary International, a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders, was established in Chicago in 1905. The clubs in the organization provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace. More than 1.2 million service-minded leaders belong to more than 32,000 Rotary Clubs in 200 countries and geographical areas around the world.  Each Rotary Club meets weekly so that members may advance the club's service goals and enjoy each other's fellowship.

The Mesquite Rotary Club was established in 1959 and meets at noon each Tuesday at the Dallas Athletic Club.
