Proof positive: Bulldogs reap rewards from tough non-district slate

Some teams will fatten up their win column with an easy early schedule, while others sprinkle in occasional tough opponents.

McKinney North boys soccer head coach Tommy Sills takes a different approach.

"We played such a tough pre-district that I knew the kids would come around, and it just took some time," he said. "Playing the really good teams made us a lot better and they started seeing that and got some confidence and that's why we're playing real well right now."

Boys basketball: Ellison too athletic for Flower Mound, Jags bounced in area round

Published: Friday, February 22, 2013 11:03 PM CST
Flower Mound's boys basketball team went toe-to-toe with Killeen Ellison Friday night, staying within eight points in the final quarter before ultimately succumbing to the Eagles, 61-52.

The Jaguars actually led at the half, 20-18, and were down 38-32, after three quarters.

"We just had trouble scoring," said Jason Fossett, Flower Mound head coach. "They were just so athletic."

Fossett said the Jaguars remained in striking distance in the fourth but Ellison converted a majority of its free throws down the stretch to thwart off any potential rally from Flower Mound.

On Tuesday, Ryan Reibly and Jacob Feickert scored 18 points apiece, while Justin Gammill contributed 12 as Flower Mound knocked off Grapevine in the bi-district round, 60-55.

After spotting the Mustangs an 8-2 lead, the Jaguars closed the first quarter with a 15-4 spurt to take the lead. However, Grapevine had the answer in the second quarter with a 22-13 run to lead by four at the half.

"They just went on a huge run," Fossett said. "We got a little foul trouble and they were playing well. But in the second half, slowly but surely we started to pull away. We did a better job on the boards and with handling their press."

After committing 13 turnovers in the first half, Flower Mound coughed the ball up just once in the second half.

Gammill scored all 12 of his points in the second half, including 10 in the third quarter as part of a 17-11 advantage.

Alex Greisen led Grapevine with 14 points.

"They had a pretty balanced team," Fossett said. "Greisen was one of their better players and we did a pretty good job on him."

While the Jaguars saw their season come to a close Friday, they still returned to the postseason for the first time since 2009 and set a program record with 26 wins.
