10-4A BOYS BASKETBALL: West Mesquite cruises past Terrell, finishes regular season tied for second

Published: Wednesday, February 13, 2013 1:11 PM CST
West Mesquite closed out the regular season in strong fashion on Tuesday with a 51-30 victory over Terrell.

The Wranglers, who rested several starters, did what they needed to down the stretch to stay in the running for the 10-4A championship, but they came up one game short, as Carrollton Newman Smith wrapped up the title and the No. 1 seed in the playoffs with a victory over Carrollton Creekview on Tuesday.

West Mesquite finishes district play with an 11-3 record and is tied for second place with Highland Park. However because the Wranglers swept the head-to-head series, they will be the second seed in the playoffs and will meet Frisco Wakeland in the bi-district round next week.

The Wranglers figured to not have much trouble with the winless Tigers and they did not. West Mesquite opened the game on a 14-5 run, led by double figures at halftime and put the game away with a 16-2 spurt in the third quarter.

Jordan Johnson had 12 poitns and Anthony Walker added eight.

Poteet had its playoff hopes dashed last week, but went out on the right foot with a 63-52 win over Forney on Tuesday to even its 10-4A record with 7-7.

The Pirates, who got 24 points from Raffaele Gaines and 12 from Nathaniel Gaines, grabbed a 17-14 lead after one quarter and steadily built on it the rest of the way.

Newman Smith will open next week's playoffs against The Colony. If West Mesquite is the second seed, it will play Frisco Wakeland in the first round. As the third seed, they will take on Frisco.

North Forney, the fourth-place team from 10-4A, draws 9-4A champion Little Elm in the bi-district round.
