Work session scheduled to review rezoning plans

Published: Monday, February 25, 2013 4:23 PM CST
The Lewisville ISD Board of Trustees will host a work session at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Bolin Administration Center to discuss the two proposals made by the boundary committee regarding Flower Mound High School feeder schools.

“The board wanted to discuss the proposals and look at the input from both the committee and the residents,” said Liz Haas, LISD spokeswoman. “And they felt that a work session was the best way to do so.”

The board won’t take action Wednesday, and public input will not be taken. The board is expected to see the proposals at its March 18 meeting and possibly take action April 8.

LISD officials tasked the committee late last year with coming up with boundary changes to address the overcrowding at such schools as McKamy and Shadow Ridge middle schools, as well as make better use for the underutilized Forestwood Middle School.

The committee finalized two proposals earlier this month and hosted two public meetings for community input.

“The committee felt it was best to have two proposals to present because the board can do nothing or could come up with a different plan,” Haas said.

The proposals drew support and opposition, but the majority of those who spoke at the meetings were concerned about the plans. One reason is because the proposals called for several students who currently live close to their schools to be rezoned for campuses located farther away.

Among the modifications from the original plan is a change to Old Settlers Elementary School’s zone. The original proposal called for the western boundary for the school to reach Rocky Point Road. The modification calls for the western boundary to stop farther east at Shoreline Drive.

Originally, both proposals called for portions of Liberty and Wellington elementary schools to be rezoned for Old Settlers. With the change, all Liberty students would remain together.

The modified Proposal 1 also factors in the future Lakeside DFW development, calling for students who live there to attend Bluebonnet Elementary.

Other components of Proposal 1include all students from Old Settlers going to McKamy. All of the Wellington students would attend Forestwood.

Also, about the Flower Mound students who attend Vickery Elementary would attend Forest Vista Elementary.

The changes in Proposal 2 include the Old Settlers boundary being extended farther west to Rocky Point Road instead of High Meadow Road. Haas said that is expected to impact seven students. The change would prevent a neighborhood from being split.

Like the original Proposal 1, the Proposal 2 modification sends the Flower Mound students who attend Vickery to Forest Vista and sends the future Lakeside DFW students to Bluebonnet.
