One step short: Dallas Christian falls in TAPPS Class 4A state championship game
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
Since the opening week of the season, Dallas Christian had beaten back all challengers.
The Chargers needed to do that one more time on Saturday in order to capture their second boys basketball state championship in school history and first since 1996.
But Dallas Christian found itself in the unfamiliar position of trailing early and while it made several charges, it could never quite climb all the way back in a 58-48 loss to Houston Westbury Christian in the TAPPS Class 4A state championship game at Mansfield Legacy High School.
Dallas Christian trailed 13-8 after one quarter and while it got the offense going with 19 points in the second quarter, Westbury Christian matched them every step to maintain the five-point lead.
The Chargers drew to within 43-39 through three quarters, but Westbury Christian won the final period, 15-9, and subsequently, the state title.
Alex Craig had 21 points and Cameron Martin added 13 for Dallas Christian. Charles Simmons and Kirk Berger scored 19 and 18 points, respectively, for Westbury Christian.
