Energetic display: TXU film contest features local talent

Published: Wednesday, March 13, 2013 3:57 PM CDT
A picture could be worth more than a $1,000 for a group of county students.

Student directors from Plano, Frisco and McKinney are among the finalists in TXU Energy's film contest, Light Up the Red Carpet. The competition focuses on short films about energy education and conservation.

“What does energy mean to you?” said Donna Egen, TXU Energy's manager of brand and promotions, in a video announcing the contest. “What does it mean to you in your life? What does it mean potentially in your future? That's the focus for the student film contest this year. How would you tell that story to a theater full of your friends?”

TXU Energy has held the contest for four years and given out more than $70,000 in prizes.

Jane Zeng of Plano Senior High School, Jamie Weiss of McKinney High, and Rachel Cocke of Frisco Wakeland are competing for cash prizes for themselves and their schools and the chance to have their film screened at the 2013 Dallas International Film Festival.

Zeng's film, “Limit,” is a comedy about four friends trying to find ways to conserve energy. Weiss stars in and directs “Not Just a Dream,” which is about a girl who falls asleep in class and dreams about the future of energy. Cocke also stars in her film, “The Electricity Between Us,” which is about a boy who uses energy-saving methods to set a romantic mood.

Each of the films are about four minutes long.

The contest is split into two categories, high school and college. A grand-prize, first-prize and community-voting winner will be selected in each category by a judging panel and online voting, which will decide the community winner and account for 30 percent of a submission's score in the main competition.

The community winner will receive $500 and an equal amount will be given to their school in technology grants. Those amounts rise to $1,500 and $3,750 for the first and grand-prize winners, respectively. All winners will also receive a VIP experience at the Dallas film festival.

There are nine high school finalists and 10 college finalists, including Neil Anderson from the University of North Texas. His film, “Legacy,” mixes natural and industrial images during a father and daughter's car trip and ends with the lines: “87 percent of our energy comes from non-renewable sources. What will you leave your children?”

The competition began in November when contestants submitted a concept of their film to a panel of judges, who selected 30 in each category. Those concepts where then presented to the community, which selected the films that would go into production through online voting.

Each contestant was then given video editing software and paired up with an industry mentor to complete their project, which was due in February. Final voting on the finalists ends March 29 and the winners will be announced April 12.
