The Horn girls soccer team was burning to get back out on the field.

After playing perhaps its worst game of the season in a loss to last-place Tyler Lee, the Jaguars responded with one of their best efforts of the year on Friday.

Torri Sayman scored twice and Bayleah Hill and the defense registered their 12th shutout of the season as Horn rolled over district-leading Rockwall in a 4-0 victory.

The Jaguars (6-2-1-0, 20 points) closed the gap for the 12-5A top spot to one point in handing the Yellow Jackets (6-1-1-1, 21 points) their first regulation loss during district play.

Sayman opened the scoring in the 12th minute, taking a feed from Isabel Gracia and putting it in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. Later in the first half, Arianna Dunsworth set Sayman up for another score to give the Jaguars a 2-0 lead going into halftime.

Horn extended its lead in the 53rd minute when Courtney King scored an unassisted goal. The Jaguars then put an exclamation point on the victory in the final minutes when Jordan Kondikoff scored with an assist from Brooke Hill.

While the two district leaders were battling, there was also an important match in the fight for third place.

North Mesquite was not as fortunate as its crosstown rivals, as it dropped a 4-2 decision to Longview.

The Stallions (4-3-0-2, 14 points), who got goals from Karissa Dominguez and Aileen Lara, are now four points behind Longview (6-4-0-0, 18 points) in the race for third place.

But more pressing for North Mesquite is that Mesquite (4-6-0-0, 12 points), who rallied past Tyler Lee on Friday, is within striking distance in the race for the final playoff berth.

The teams took some time off for Spring Break this week but will return to action on Tuesday to resume the stretch run.

Mesquite and Horn will play the first half of a double-header on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at E.H. Hanby Stadium. North Mesquite will face sixth-place Rockwall-Heath at 7:15 p.m. at Berry Middle School in a match it can ill afford to give away.
